Inverse Square Law and Exposure in Photography✅✅✅

The inverse square law is one of the most important principles for understanding how light behaves in photography. It explains why moving a light only a small distance can produce a surprisingly large change in brightness—and why the distance between the light source and subject directly affects exposure, contrast, and background brightness.

Important Practical Rule for Photographers

Remember this simple relationship:

Closer light → faster falloff → stronger differences in illumination.

Farther light → slower relative falloff across the scene → more even illumination.

This gives you creative control over both exposure and lighting relationships.

The inverse square law is not simply a mathematical rule about brightness.

It is a creative lighting tool.

By controlling the distance between your light, subject, and background, you can influence:

* Subject exposure
* Background exposure
* Light falloff
* Contrast
* Separation
* Uniformity of illumination
* Mood
* Shadow behaviour
* Exposure differences between subjects

The key lesson is:

Changing the distance of a light changes the exposure, but it also changes the relationship between every object and that light.

That is why professional photographers don’t think about exposure only in terms of ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. They also think about where the light is placed.

Easy memory formula

1 m → 2 m = −2 stops

2 m → 4 m = −2 stops

1 m → 4 m = −4 stops

And:

Light intensity ∝ 1 / distance²

Once you understand this relationship, you can deliberately control not only how bright your subject is, but also how bright or dark the background becomes.

📸 اليوم حابة أحكي عن إعداد من إعدادات الكاميرا اسمه Tv.

أول شي، الـ Tv ما إله علاقة بالتلفزيون 😂📺
بعض الناس بفكروا هيك، بس هو اختصار لـ Time Value، وببساطة هو وضع بتتحكمي فيه بسرعة الغالق (Shutter Speed).

يعني إنتِ بتحددي سرعة الغالق، والكاميرا بتضبط فتحة العدسة تلقائيًا حسب الإضاءة.

مثلاً إذا بدك تصوري حركة سريعة، ممكن تستخدمي سرعة مثل 1/500 أو 1/1000 عشان تجمّدي الحركة.

أما إذا السرعة كانت بطيئة، ممكن يطلع عندك طمس بالحركة (Motion Blur)، خصوصًا إذا الشخص أو الكاميرا تحركوا.

فباختصار:
Tv = أنا بتحكم بسرعة الغالق، والكاميرا بتساعدني بالباقي. 🎥📷
