🌺 මහ රත්මල් – Sri Lanka’s Highland Jewel 🌺

Captured in bloom amidst the cool montane forests of Sri Lanka, this striking flower belongs to Maha Rathmal (Rhododendron arboreum subsp. zeylanicum), a rare and remarkable subspecies found only in Sri Lanka's central highlands.

Known for its vibrant crimson blossoms, Maha Rathmal thrives in misty mountain ecosystems such as Horton Plains, Pidurutalagala, and other high-elevation forests. These brilliant flowers not only add breathtaking beauty to the landscape but also provide an important nectar source for pollinators.

What makes this plant truly special is that the subspecies zeylanicum is endemic to Sri Lanka, meaning it naturally occurs nowhere else in the world. As a unique component of our island's biodiversity, it serves as a reminder of the importance of conserving Sri Lanka’s fragile montane forest ecosystems.

📍 Common Name: Maha Rathmal
🔬 Scientific Name: Rhododendron arboreum subsp. zeylanicum
🌍 Endemic to Sri Lanka
🏔️ Habitat: Montane forests above 1,500 m elevation
🌺 Flowering Season: Usually from February to April

Every bloom tells a story of Sri Lanka’s rich natural heritage and the need to protect it for future generations.

📍Muthiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya, Badulla

Muthiyangana Raja Maha Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple located in the heart of Badulla. It is one of the Solosmasthana (sixteen sacred sites) in Sri Lanka, believed to have been hallowed by the visit of Lord Buddha.

The Buddha's Visit:
It is believed that during his third visit to Sri Lanka, the Buddha visited this location at the invitation of King Indaka, a local ruler of the Namunukula mountain range.

Sacred Relics:
The temple's stupa enshrines several sacred relics, including strands of the Buddha's hair and Mukthodathu (sweat droplets that turned into pearls).

Royal Patronage:
While King Indaka built the original structure, it was later expanded and renovated by various monarchs, including King Devanampiya Tissa and King Vijayabahu I.

Key Features

The Stupa:
A white pagoda standing approximately 65 feet tall with a diameter of 270 feet.

Thorana (Entrance):
A magnificent six-level entrance arch decorated with intricate figures of animals and a Makara (dragon) head.

Bodhi Trees:
The temple grounds house four sacred Bodhi trees. One is a sapling from the original Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura, and another is known as the Ananda Bodhi.

Image Houses:
There are two main image houses containing serene Buddha statues and ancient murals, including a painting of the Vessantara Jatakaya.
