Pray for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis in years. The acute shortage of US dollars in the country has pushed up the price of basic food items including milk, that are essential for regular meals and food businesses. The island country is facing a double whammy of increasing prices and high external debt.

Faced with an acute economic and energy crisis, triggered due to a shortage of foreign exchange, Sri Lanka’s fuel shortage has forced tens of thousands of people to queue for hours outside petrol pumps. People are also facing long hours of power cuts daily.

According to economists, Sri Lanka’s debt spiral was already on an unsustainable path even before the pandemic dried up the tourism funds.

With a number of socio-political grounds inducing a growing crisis in the country’s economy, Sri Lanka has joined the line of countries that have undergone similar crises.

இலங்கை பல வருடங்களில் மிக மோசமான பொருளாதார நெருக்கடியை எதிர்கொண்டுள்ளது. நாட்டில் அமெரிக்க டாலர்களின் கடுமையான தட்டுப்பாடு வழக்கமான உணவு மற்றும் உணவு வணிகங்களுக்கு அத்தியாவசியமான பால் உள்ளிட்ட அடிப்படை உணவுப் பொருட்களின் விலையை உயர்த்தியுள்ளது. விலைவாசி உயர்வு மற்றும் அதிக வெளிநாட்டுக் கடன் போன்றவற்றால் தீவு நாடு இரட்டிப்புச் சுமையை எதிர்கொள்கிறது.

அந்நிய செலாவணி பற்றாக்குறையால் தூண்டப்பட்ட கடுமையான பொருளாதார மற்றும் எரிசக்தி நெருக்கடியை எதிர்கொண்டுள்ள இலங்கையின் எரிபொருள் தட்டுப்பாடு பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான மக்களை பெட்ரோல் பம்புகளுக்கு வெளியே மணிக்கணக்கில் வரிசையில் நிற்க வைத்துள்ளது. மக்கள் தினமும் நீண்ட நேரம் மின்வெட்டுக்கு ஆளாகின்றனர்.

பொருளாதார வல்லுனர்களின் கூற்றுப்படி, தொற்றுநோய் சுற்றுலா நிதிகளை வறண்டு போவதற்கு முன்பே, இலங்கையின் கடன் சுழல் ஏற்கனவே நீடிக்க முடியாத பாதையில் இருந்தது.

நாட்டின் பொருளாதாரத்தில் வளர்ந்து வரும் நெருக்கடியைத் தூண்டும் பல சமூக-அரசியல் காரணங்களால், இலங்கையும் இதே போன்ற நெருக்கடிகளுக்கு உள்ளான நாடுகளின் வரிசையில் இணைந்துள்ளது.
