March 2022 Challenge -

A summary by Ron McNerney

My first thought when I read the challenge subject was “Box”…lead me to think of the brown cardboard container. And someone did incorporate an actual cardboard box into their photograph. Mal Henry Kendrick’s “Fox in a box.”
The ongoing trend with this challenge was not of a box as in the container but other objects which were so named ‘box’. The mail box, the post box, the fire alarm box and the telephone box are all examples.

I was impressed with the creativity of Dharamveer Garg’s “Gift/Souvenir Shop” image. Being that it was a photograph of a business…a shop that was designed to look like a box was extremely creative and eye catching on the part of the owner, and this carried over into Dharamveer’s capture of it.

…and on to some facts and figures.

As I have mentioned before, the computer is very unforgiving…we all need to enter the complete code. ????? And please add a title to your submission…then the photo can be identified by anyone searching for it.

Submit a new photo in the challenge…not one that you have previously posted. This will help to keep the group fresh.
And please, don’t forget to give your photo entry a title. Even as simple as “Tree” or “Untitled #1” or as complex as “Sitting under the Joshua tree at sunset”. This is to assist in identifying challenge submissions. Thank you. It is much easier for group members to search for the photographs if they have a title. The photographer and title of the five most popular photo submissions are specifically mentioned in the month end review.

April 2022 Challenge -

Over millions of years, flowering plants have produced blooms of different shapes and colors that compete with one another for the attention of butterflies, ants, and bees. Whether driven by nutrition, aesthetics, or something else, people have long imbued flowers with personal, cultural, and religious significance.

Flowers are popular subject for artists spanning for centuries, with many dedicating their careers to produce still-life paintings of various botanical beauties. Artists have captured the rich symbolism of flowers, tracing the changing meanings of roses, irises, tulips, carnations, and more. Depending on the context, a single flower can represent reproduction or decay, purity or promiscuity, love or hardship—or nothing more than a pile of petals. There's a timeless sense of joy, hope, or even moroseness that paintings of flowers can evoke.

This month’s challenge robs our joy of showing flowers in their vibrant color (we are a Black and White Photography group); however, it’ll force us to think about details, shape, curve, form, light direction to highlight the monochromatic tones.

Go beyond a simple shot of a flower, think about flower arrangement, or explore the hidden meaning of flower.

Include the hash tag when you participate. Make us surprise with your unique imagery.

February 2022 Challenge -

~ The theme for February was Sunglasses. When it cam time to write up this month’s summary of the challenge, the first thing I did was a search of the word sunglasses and all the images associated with it. I was rather surprised to find that the only thing that showed up was stock photos for the sale of sunglasses! There was no creativity in the photos offered. Yes, all of our photos had sunglasses and, mostly being worn by people, however, there was a variety and a creativity in how the glasses were shown. Advertising agencies tend to draw from that same group of glamorous people…matters not, if they are selling cosmetics, sports equipment, clothing, automobiles, or sunglasses.
~ However, the images shared for the challenge were much more of real people. And, in my opinion, this is what made the photos so interesting. Nancy Pavay submitted matching photos of “Jenny” and “Jessie” these were adorable! Paul Meadows and Ron McNerney submitted self-portrait type photos. Randy Moore gets special mention for submitting a wall mural which featured a person in sunglasses…that was a creative interpretation of the challenge. There were three photos of dogs wearing sunglasses submitted by Ron McNerney and Diane Sears Worthy. In at least one photo by the following members…Dharamveer Garg, Gary Goza, Nancy Pavay, and David Bazinet…the focus was on the actual sunglasses with out them being worn by a person.

~ The selecting of the Top Five by the number of ‘Likes” received turned out a bit different this month. First off, while I submit photos for the challenge, I do not actually participate in the challenge. However, this month the photo “Portrait of ME!” is an oddity. I selected the location, tested and adjusted the camera, and posed for the shot. My wife pushed the button (and she is a member of the group, though she is not terribly active). This was the number one selection. The other four spots were tied up between Nancy Pavay and myself.

January 2002 Challenge -

A summary by Ron McNerney

~ The theme for January was Flight. For ages, man has turned his gaze upward toward the sky with great longing. To travel, to explore…first by walking, later by horseback and finally by sailing ships. But, still there was this desire to take flight like the birds.
~ It is not surprising that the majority of photographs submitted for the challenge of Flight had something to do with birds. What is so very interesting is that while birds were incorporated in so many images, they were portrayed in a wide variety of styles. Yes, the bird was flying…a bird simply sitting on a log does not necessarily convey the concept of flight…potential flight, maybe. We were privileged to view many different birds and in many different stages of flight. Some soaring high, others landing or taking off.
~ Photographer, in general, seem to be fascinated with wildlife in it’s natural setting…so, images of birds was a natural selection.
~ There were photographs depicting man as he progressed and actually took to the skies…aircraft on display, hot air balloons, and commercial airlines.
~ I am always drawn to the photographer who is able to think outside the box, the one who submits an image that takes the challenge in a different direction. Dharamveer Garg’s photo “Fight or Flight” pictured two squirrels in a standoff. There was no actual flight in this image, yet it was an outstanding adaption of the challenge…a delightful play on words. The other very unique submission was of Matthias Schwarz’s “Motocross-action, Sidecar-acrobats.” Here we were allowed to experience the actual flight of an earth-bound motorcycle.

February 2022 Challenge -

It's finally sunny after never-ending cloudy weather during this cold winter and everyone’s walking around with their shades on in my hometown, Los Angeles. Sunglasses are arguably a fashion/style staple among celebrities. It is rare to see a celebrity without a pair of sunglasses when they are out during the day and sometimes even night. A Kim Kardashian style of sunglasses is usually an oversized pair of aviator sunglasses, a Taylor Swift style of sunglasses is usually a colorful type of wayfarer style shades, and so on.

If someone else was wearing sunglasses, it’s possible you are struggling in getting to know them. They are hard to read and they don’t trust you enough to let you in.

As part of the challenge, we’d love to see you go beyond a simple shot of a pair of sunglasses. Whereas eyeglasses are seen as a symbol of intelligence, insight, and many characters with glasses are portrayed as having advanced intellect or mental faculties. On the other hand, sunglasses offer up an instant dimension of cool and laid-back vibe when you’re on a vacation.
