Manuel Antonio Series #1: The Ghost of the Forest Floor

The Common Pauraque is easily one of the hardest animals to spot. We were lucky enough to find this one tucked away in the leaf lbed, a sighting that would have been impossible without the expert eye of our guide.

Did you know these birds don't build nests? They lay their eggs directly on the forest floor. To keep them safe, they are masters of deception. If a predator gets too close, the parent performs a "broken-wing display," limping away to lure the threat away from the nest. It’s a beautiful, risky example of parental sacrifice in the wild.

Nature’s own light show ⚡️

Moving away from wildlife for a moment to celebrate the start of storm season here in Lithuania! I managed to catch these photogenic bolts dancing over Business Park and mall last night.

Neither of them is sponsoring this post... yet. I’m open to offers, guys! 😜

Reptile Week: Day 7 (A little belated! 🦖)

To wrap up this series, meet the charming Border Anole. This little guy joined us for a break while we were exploring Manuel Antonio National Park.

We almost missed him in the shadows since his camouflage was so effective! But he decided to show off some impressive jumping and dancing skills (check the video!) before striking a pose on this tree trunk. The intense green backlighting made for a beautiful photo, though it was definitely a challenge to process the light.

Costa Rica is a global hotspot for these lizards, with approximately 40 to 45 different species as of 2026. If you keep your eyes peeled, you’re almost guaranteed to meet one of these tiny locals on your trek!

Reptile Week: Day 6 🦎

When religion and nature meet, you get the Jesus Christ Lizard! While this basilisk can’t transform water into wine, it settled for the next best thing: walking on water. Sadly, we didn’t get to see those superpowers in action this time.

This stunning adult specimen was found in the least expected place, hanging out on a tree right next to the restrooms in Manuel Antonio National Park. It just goes to show that in Costa Rica, you never get a break from the magic... but I can definitely live with that. 😁

Reptile Week: Day 5 🐊

Probably one of the deadliest creatures I have photographed to date, though sadly from a "too safe" distance! I say this because I would have loved to get closer to capture every detail of their skin, teeth, and eyes.

The conditions at the Tárcoles Crocodile Bridge were not ideal. While it was a safe bet for seeing crocodiles, the vantage point was tricky; the high perspective makes it difficult to get a good composition and separation between the subject and the background. On top of that, the harsh sun created strong reflections on the water, making it hard to capture the full body clearly.

I had to push the post-processing a bit further than usual to work around the lighting and composition issues, but I’m happy with the final result. I hope you like it too!

Reptile Week: Day 4 🐍

And finally... a snake! One of my main goals for this trip was to see as many snakes as possible. I won’t lie, I would have liked to see even more (in this line of work, it’s never enough!), but we had the chance to witness some truly incredible specimens.

This beauty was the first one we encountered, spotted only thanks to our guide’s "eagle eyes." It was tucked away quite a distance from us, perfectly camouflaged in the shadows beneath a bridge. It took us several minutes to actually lock eyes on it, and even longer to find a vantage point where it could be photographed without distracting debris in the way.

I’ll admit I went a bit "dramatic" with the processing on this shot, but I wanted to emphasize the separation between the subject and its environment. I think the intricate beauty of those scales deserves the spotlight.
