The round goby is a beautiful little fish, but it is also an invasive species. Originally native to the Black Sea region, it has spread northwards into European waters and eventually reached the Baltic Sea, most likely transported in ships’ ballast water.

The Baltic Sea is so polluted that cockroaches have started breeding in it!
Of course, I’m joking. Baltic isopods (sea cockroaches in Lithuanian) settled in the Baltic Sea immediately after the Ice Age, about 10,000–12,000 years ago, and now are among the largest crustaceans in the Baltic Sea. They feed on carrion and other small bottom-dwelling animals, and themselves are a very important food source for cod.

Aukšlės - gana plačiai paplitusios žuvys, galinčios gyventi tiek stovinčio vandens telkiniuose, tiek ir upėse, o jų žvynai kadaise naudoti dirbtinio perlamutro gamybai.

Bleaks are fairly widespread fish that live in lakes and rivers, whose scales were historically used to make artificial nacres.

Northern pike can grow to nearly 30 kg in weight and reach lengths of up to 1.5 m. However, much smaller individuals dominate most Lithuanian water bodies. Scientific monitoring data also indicate that, in many lakes and rivers, the abundance of predatory fish remains below the level required to achieve good ecological status. Therefore, if you catch a pike or another predatory fish, consider releasing it back into the water and enjoying the photos of your catch instead.

2013 metai Lietuvos vidaus vandens telkiniuose uždraudus verslinę žvejybą (su išimtimis) Kauno mariose įvyko staigus ir labai ryškus žuvų biomasės didėjimas. Šiandien kilograminė kuoja Kauno mariose nieko nebestebina, o kartu su plakiais ir karšiais šios žuvys sudaro daugiau nei pusę visų Kauno marių žuvų pagal svorį.

In 2013, following the ban on commercial fishing (with exceptions) in Lithuania’s inland waters, there was a sudden and very significant increase in fish biomass in the Kaunas water reservoir. Today, a kilogram-sized roach in the Kaunas reservoir is no longer a surprise, and together with white bream and bream, these fish account for more than half of all fish in the Kaunas Lagoon by weight.

Have you ever heard swimmers say they saw “floating worms” in the sea? I have 🙂 Most likely, though, they weren’t worms at all. They were fish with a very unusual, elongated appearance - Straightnose pipefish

European perch are among the most widespread and ecologically plastic freshwater fish in Lithuania. They tolerate a broad spectrum of environmental conditions, including small dystrophic and marshy lakes where low pH and reduced oxygen concentrations limit the presence of many other species.
Their success is linked to physiological tolerance to acidity, flexible feeding strategies, and high reproductive capacity. In such harsh habitats, perch often become the dominant or even the only fish species, playing a key role in structuring invertebrate and plankton communities.

For many people, the gudgeon is closely associated with their very first fishing experiences 🙂
