Lesvos is a magnet for birdwatchers. I've never seen so much kharki on an aeroplane. These are just a few of the great birds seen in the first couple of days.

After our stay in Zimbabwe, we travelled to Botswana for the rest of the trip, starting in the north on the Chobe River. Some great birds seen here too.

A selection of the birds seen at Victoria Falls earlier this month.
Each photo has it's name.
We had three nights there and there were new birds everywhere you looked.

One of the strangest birds in Africa is the Secretarybird. It stands at about 1.5m tall with long legs and long head plumes. It kills its prey by stamping on it, usually snakes, grasshoppers, insects and other small animals. We were lucky to see two in Hwange in Zimbabwe.

We're coming to the end of our holiday in Zimbabwe and Botswana. Most of the time we have had little or no internet connection, so photos of the trip will follow when we get home.

Today was a thoroughly grey, dismal day, but it was well worth the trip to Elton Reservoir in Bury to see the Slavonian Grebe. It's usually a coastal bird from Scandanavia, but this one has been here since Sunday. It's a bit of a dull bird in winter plumage.
The peregrine flew through causing chaos among the birds on the water.

I don't often go "twitching" - chasing birds just so that I can tick them off a list - but if one's nearby, I will. This was at Mow Cop, in Staffordshire.
It's a Shore Lark, an occasional visitor to the UK from the mountains of Europe and Scandanavia, and was not too far away, so I went to see if I could see it. There was a group of other birders there when I arrived, so it was pointed out to me. Unfortunately not close up and in poor light, but worth the trip.

It's warm enough for butterflies here in Fuerteventura. Two of these Monarchs in the grounds of the hotel.
