Territorial dispute or aggressive courtship? Either way, someone definitely doesn't understand the concept of personal space!

Spent a hilarious few minutes watching this Little Egret relentlessly pursue its neighbor along the ledge, culminating in a literal ankle-nipping moment at the end. The dramatic wing-flapping and open-beak scolding really sell the drama.

Caught this Common Ringed Plover standing guard along the southern coast of Malta, right in that peaceful lull just before sunrise on the very last morning of August. There’s something special about the quiet stillness of dawn when the rest of the island is still asleep. 🌅🌊

'Casual Layover'

Caught this relaxed little traveler taking a well-deserved breather on the wire yesterday!

The European Bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) have officially arrived in Malta, kicking off their autumn migration south toward sub-Saharan Africa. Watching him perch so effortlessly, you'd almost forget the astonishing journey these birds undertake. Before sitting back like this, he’s been working hard hunting on the wing—and as their name suggests, bees and wasps are their absolute favorite snack.

To avoid getting stung, a bee-eater will snap up a bee in mid-air, fly back to a perch just like this wire, and repeatedly beat the insect against the hard surface to remove the stinger and squeeze out the venom before swallowing it whole! 🐝✨

These colorful visitors won't stay long, but hopefully, this flock sticks around for another week or so before continuing their flight.

'A Sweet Consolation Prize'

Went out today on a quest to spot a hoopoe, but being I had my first day off of the season, with literally nothing planned or booked, I decided to spend the WHOLE day taking photos, so I braved the scorching midday heat instead of heading out during early morning or evening. Naturally, the hoopoe was smart enough to stay hidden from me and the sun! ☀️🥵

It wasn't a total loss, though as I probably melted off a good 5kg walking around in the heat!!! I was also treated to this lovely collared dove quietly preening itself on a post. Doves might be a common sight here in Malta, but their soft features and sweet, expressive faces never fail to charm me. Sometimes the everyday visitors make the best subjects. 🕊️✨

'Early Bird Special'

As someone who is definitely not a morning person, setting a 5:00 AM alarm is a small personal tragedy. But heading down to the South of Malta just before the sun peeked over the horizon made every missed minute of sleep completely worth it. 🌅

I caught this Ruddy Turnstone exploring the rocky shore in that soft, pre-dawn light just seconds before sunrise. There's something magical about having the coast completely to yourself while the rest of the island is still asleep.

Are you an early riser, or do you only see the sunrise when you force yourself up for photography? If you are an early riser, who early do you go to sleep, as I was not able to go to bed earlier than I normally do....infact I went to bad later than I usually do, so only got 5 hours of sleep!!! 'Curiosity in the Corner'

A different perspective from Simar Nature Reserve earlier this week. I tucked this Grey Heron into the lower-left corner to experiment with negative space and compositional direction.

Because he’s looking up into the empty space, your eyes naturally wander off-camera trying to see what he’s focused on. Sometimes the story outside the frame is just as interesting as what's inside it.

Sometimes the best details are the ones that break symmetry. I’ve already shared the dramatic half-face crop from this set, but I just couldn’t keep the full portrait tucked away in the archives!
Swipe to see the full frame—and that adorable left ear with its own little personality. It’s those slight quirks that make a photograph truly memorable to me. 🐶📸

Cropping can completely change the tone of a portrait. While the tight half-face crop brings intensity and focus to his stare, opening up the frame reveals the subtle character details—like that charmingly uneven left ear. 🐕✨
