When Casita Mia de Mita received its ABC (Bridal Consultant) certification, I was reminded why this venue has remained one of my favorite places to photograph weddings over the years.
First, the people. Their warmth and genuine hospitality have remained remarkably consistent. Second, the location. Set on one of Punta Mita's most beautiful beaches, with dramatic cliffs that create an extraordinary backdrop for both the experience and the photographs.
The venue is exceptionally well designed. Easy access, parking directly at the property, and the absence of time-consuming security procedures make the day run effortlessly. With several distinct spaces, weddings can move naturally from one setting to another, giving each part of the celebration its own atmosphere.
To mark the occasion, Casita Mia de Mita introduced a new live music experience alongside a seven-course menu that reflected the same level of care found throughout the venue. Every course was thoughtfully adapted to each guest's dietary requirements and personal preferences.

Rainy season, Sayulita 8:30am.
One hour. Eighty photos. Fast friends.

Scheduling a session in rainy season, between June and October, takes knowledge, intuition, and plain luck. A lot of couples spiral into weather anxiety. Not Taylor.
It had been raining in the evenings, so I suggested 8:30am. I picked them up at their Airbnb, and from the moment they got in the car, they seemed determined to make me comfortable. Which is technically my job. Either way, it worked.
On the beach, the awkwardness of the first photos lasted maybe a few minutes. When Sonya let her hair down, everything started flowing - every click turned into a photograph. A thin layer of cloud had stretched across the sky. A photographer's dream.
On the drive back, the conversation was good enough that it was a little sad when they closed the car door. I hope we make good on our promise to meet again.

Surprise proposal. Imanta Resort, Punta Mita. 5pm, July rooftop.

As it turned out, nobody had slept. Not the groom, not the photographer, not even the hotel owner. The proposal took place at Imanta's bar, Observatorio — a platform overlooking an untouched stretch of paradise beach, the kind of view you can't quite picture even as you're climbing the stairs toward it. The bar is up there on the platform. Inside it, hidden: flowers, ch*****ne, and two cameras. I am undercover as a bartender, wiping glasses, waiting.

A loud hello, and there they are — walking into the Observatorio, perfectly positioned. I drop the towel, grab the camera (settings already dialed in), and with a few quick steps I'm in place. The groom glances sideways, catches me, and drops to one knee. From that moment on it's just the relief of click-click-click.
The roof is scorching, though. We're all breathing hard. Sweat comes through the shirt first, then through everything else. July humidity is the kind of thing you forget every winter without fail. We continue the session alone on the beach, until the heat makes it clear that enough is enough. I thank them, and leave them with their ch*****ne at the water's edge.
The sweat stains didn't make the final cut.

The morning started at the Shamusho — the little house beside the shrine where everyone gathers to get ready and share a tea ceremony before the celebration begins.
From there, a short processional to the ceremony. Fifty steps, maybe less.
Shinto wedding ceremonies are sacred and private — no cameras allowed. I set mine down and sat with the guests.
The day before I had spent a few hours scouting the park at the same time of day, same light, hunting for the prettiest sakura branches and planning the flow. I was hoping for at least thirty minutes with the couple.
After the ceremony came family portraits, and by the time we reached the park there were ten minutes left. A bride in a full traditional wedding outfit moves slowly and beautifully — and suddenly the park feels vast, and the main sakura gate feels very far away.
But I knew this park. I quickly redesigned the route, and we found five completely different locations in ten minutes sharp.

“Why don’t you come to our wedding in Kyoto during sakura season?”

“I absolutely will.”

It was a dream I had never quite dared to express, never even allowed myself to dream. The Shinto ceremony itself was off-limits to photograph. Only family and friends, invited as guests, could take part. And yet, there we were, in the heart of Kyoto during sakura season, surrounded by blooming cherry trees, sipping sake and witnessing our very first wedding in Asia.
