BANGKOK, Thailand, May 5, 2026 - After a 23-hour flight, I was invited to dinner at a dimly lit Italian restaurant in Bangkok by an exceptional man who is a legend in Thailand for his work with children in the Klong Toey slum. Many of you veteran photojournalists who frequent the back streets near his Mercy Centre will know him as Fr. Joe Maier, whom I have been friends with and photographed for almost 40 years. When I was based in Bangkok for Associated Press, Fr. Joe would occasionally come over to my apartment and listen to vinyl on my Audio Research tube amplifier with attached Swiss Goldmund turntable. He loved the sound, often listenting into the wee hours. It was his sanctuary that I gladly provided. These were magic moments together. I have not seen him in a few years since moving to Mexico. With Fr. Joe being 86 and me almost 70, we aren't getting any younger ... Sometimes you just have to go see a friend.
