Oaxaca is the Turtle Capital of Mexico and we have been lucky enough to witness the amazing 'arrival' of the Olive Ridley turtle more than once now.

There will be an 'arribada' more or less every month from now until January, so if you happen to be in this part of Mexico and you fancy witnessing this amazing event for yourself, DM us!

Here on the Oaxacan coastline it's possible to witness turtles mating, laying eggs and to release newly hatched baby turtles into the Ocean!

Puerto Escondido Ocean safari 🤟

Did you know you can find at least 8 (and up to 18 - there isn't a lot of hard data) different species of cetaceans on the Oaxacan coast? Yes! Depending on the time of the year it's quite common to find Spotted dolphins, Spinners, Bottlenose dolphins, Humpback whales, Orcas, False orcas and more!

This footage is from our very first ocean safari out of Puerto Escondido, where we encountered a couple of species of dolphin and a few pairs of olive ridley turtles in the act of mating.

It's great to be in the water again and always a blessing to connect with nature 🙏🐬

The coast of Oaxaca is the most important nesting area in the world for Olive Ridley turtles, with over 4.5 million females nesting at just the two most important sites alone each year.

This means there is a truly special opportunity to witness these well-loved creatures massing in spectacular numbers.

The best time for this is between July and January when they make their way up on shore thousands at a time in what is known as an "arribada". Imagine, up to 30 000 turtles on just a single beach at the same time!!

Of course, before they nest, they need to mate. That means plenty of chances to see these love fests first hand on open ocean expeditions, as we did here.

It's important not to startle them as this can end the ritual. Fortunately, I was able to capture this amazing closeup footage from a safe distance using an long "selfie stick" and later zooming the footage in as it was originally shot in a high resolution. So, enjoy, wherever you are, and perhaps consider coming to spend some time in paradise with us and the turtles to celebrate the gradual reopening of the world when you get the chance 😉🙏🏻

Being locked down in South Africa has been a major contrast to our last trip here. On that holiday the penguins at Boulder's beach were a major highlight! Such cute little critters and a lovely day out! 🐧🐧💙

The right place at the right time! El Canon dive site at the Revillagigedo Islands is well known for its sharks and finding this group of White Tip reef sharks in the middle of a feeding frenzy was such a thrilling experience!
