The coast of Oaxaca is the most important nesting area in the world for Olive Ridley turtles, with over 4.5 million females nesting at just the two most important sites alone each year.
This means there is a truly special opportunity to witness these well-loved creatures massing in spectacular numbers.
The best time for this is between July and January when they make their way up on shore thousands at a time in what is known as an "arribada". Imagine, up to 30 000 turtles on just a single beach at the same time!!
Of course, before they nest, they need to mate. That means plenty of chances to see these love fests first hand on open ocean expeditions, as we did here.
It's important not to startle them as this can end the ritual. Fortunately, I was able to capture this amazing closeup footage from a safe distance using an long "selfie stick" and later zooming the footage in as it was originally shot in a high resolution. So, enjoy, wherever you are, and perhaps consider coming to spend some time in paradise with us and the turtles to celebrate the gradual reopening of the world when you get the chance 😉🙏🏻
