Last night, I had the pleasure of attending Borracho Bingo as their photographer. It's a fun, new event organized by my friend Holly, featuring 3 kinds of Bingo (music, trivia, and blackout), as well as some side quests, prizes, and tons of laughter. It brought together an eclectic group of folks, and it was fun to see people I know in all different capacities all in one place. 🤠👢🎶🍻

Follow along with High Tide Society for future events in Puerto Morelos. I'm looking forward to the Spanish or bilingual version they're planning to do soon!

Jéets' Méek' is often referred to as a Mayan baptism. This one took place in Leona Vicario for on the 1st Anniversary of their national designation as an Indigenous Town, and with August 9th being the International Day of the World's Indigenous People. It was really special to see the tradition come to life last night. 💖

I'd learned about the tradition from Mayan rappers a couple of years ago. I had the privilege of observing their process for composing a song about Jéets' Méek' and all of the symbolism and meaning behind the tradition. I'll include the link to their music video in the comments. ✨️🇲🇽🎶

"The ceremony is done for boys at four months of age, relating this age with the four cardinal points and the four seasons of the year; and for girls at three months of age, three being considered a feminine number and also representing the three legs which support the “comal” (tortilla griddle). In both cases, its purpose is to provide a symbolic initiation to the activities and responsibilities that they will later perform in their communities, as well as to “open their feet” so they can walk correctly and run swiftly." ~Yucatán Today
