THE ART OF WAU - CULTURE & HERITAGES

LEGACY OF A WAU MAKER

Wau Bulan Craftsman - WAN ANUAR SHAFIE

The late Pak Sapie, a master craftsman known for his traditional wau. His s legacy is now carried on by his son, Wan Anuar. Destined to be wau maker, there is no turning back for him and continuing the journey to keep the tradition. The dedication to wau making reflects a generational devotion to preserving the heritage, culture and family pride.

Wau is a traditional Malaysian kite, uniquely crafted with intricate patterns and vibrant colors, often flown during cultural festivals, especially in the state of Kelantan. It is typically made from bamboo and colored paper with designs inspired by nature, such as floral or leaf motifs. The most iconic type is the Wau Bulan (moon kite), named for its crescent-shaped tail and often associated with Malaysian identity and heritage. Flying a wau requires skill, as it can produce a humming sound when in flight due to a bow string attached to its frame. Beyond its recreational purpose, the wau symbolizes creativity, craftsmanship, and the rich cultural traditions of Malaysia.
