Sleeping bags are definitely not accepted everywhere for they can bring insects and dust from outside. No hostel wants to have a room infected by bed bugs brought in after a traveler use their sleeping bag after camping. At my hostel, we don't even allow them in the rooms, they have to stay in the luggage storage.

I feel like less and less people travel with their own sleeping sheets, which can also bring the same problems. You could have slept on a really old mattress with your sheets and now you're bringing parasites to your new hostel. Not good. Hostels that do not provide sheets are really not doing themselves a favor as it is risky.

I think that since you're going to big cities, most hostels will provide sheets for free. Charging extra for sheets is not cool. It should just be included already. And you'll have such a choice of hostels that you can go to the one that include all bedding. Blankets and the likes should all be included as well.
