Will AI replace photography?
No. And I say that as someone who has been shooting for over 15 years and has watched every "this will kill photography" moment come and go.
Here's what people keep missing. A photo was never just an image. If it was, we would all be happy with stock photos.
A photo is the 3am drive to catch the light. It's the awkward laugh when someone doesn't know what to do with their hands. It's the friend who showed up to hold the reflector for free. It's the rain that ruined the plan and gave you the best frame of the day. It's the moment two people forgot the camera was there.
AI can render skin. It can render light. It can render a face so perfect you'd swear it breathes.
But it cannot render the fact that you were there.
And here's the part nobody expects. The better AI gets, the more valuable real photographs become. When anyone can generate anything, the only thing that still means something is proof that it actually happened. Perfection becomes cheap. Truth becomes rare. Ten years from now, the photos people treasure won't be the flawless ones. They'll be the real ones.
So ask yourself this. Five years from now, you scroll back through your photos. You stop on one. Your chest tightens a little. You smile.
Will that happen with an image of a moment that never existed?
I don't think it will. Because we don't look at photos to see something beautiful. We look at photos to remember that we were alive.
AI makes images. We make memories.
That's the whole difference. And it's not a small one.
