While Business Travel . . .
Travelling for leisure or business always end up with pics taken. That said, pics taken sometimes do not get uploaded due to conflicting schedules and priorities.

Today I happened to be at hotel room, waiting for a flight back. That gave me some time to download some pics and prepare them for "issuance". Here are some . . . nothing fancy but captures some scenes outside of Malaysia.

Travelling also means bringing a camera body with light lenses. I would love to have the 70-200 around, but it was too heavy. Instead I brought a light 105MC. While it can't compare with the 70-200, it helps nonetheless, though at half the focal length.

Stay tuned for a couple more near term postings.

Absence . . .
Of late, we had been busy with multiple commitments. Thus the absence from posting. That did not mean there was an absence in photography . . . just that they were related to "work" or family matters.

Today, after the rain eased away, I noted the millipedes coming out. Good ! That's a subject to capture. Little did I realise though that when you shoot very close and they start moving around, focusing was a chore. More so when the prime I used was not that particularly fast and was hunting a bit. But . . . still managed to capture some shots.

Jewel . . .
Not the heirloom which can be passed down from one generation to another. Instead, it's just some shots of Changi's impressive vortex waterfall. We were on the flight back to KLIA . . . a short walk from Changi T2 to Jewel was worth the detour.

It's an attraction piece which thousands would taken photos of. Only that they are not the ones I took. So . . . here are some of my own shots of Jewel. Had a 50 mm which may not be the best for a full shot of Jewel. However, it works nonetheless with me having to make some compositional adjustments. Will take along the 24-70 on next visit .

Cendawan / Mushroom
Sometime back I did some shots of small mushrooms. The recent rain led to another bunch of different variety sprouting . That means another photo-opportunity to capture.

Attached are some pics of what were captured. Quite difficult to capture as they are small. To make them show up big in the shoot, I have to get close and have a macro type lens. The challenge with that is depth of field and need for very small aperture, since I shot single and not focus stack. The small aperture also means light control or light aided in ergonomically unfriendly situation.

Wild Flowers @ Home

Following through on the Guwahati Water Lillies . . . here are some shots of a creeper which grows wild. Unfortunately, I do not know what it is called.

Whatever it is, it grows fast, can cover the entire tree/plant top and in the process "strangle" its host plant. It produces nice flowers which come out of a round "furry" pod when it's ripe. There's no scent and does not seem to attract much insects, unlike other flowers. The ball of furry pod is about the size of a 50 sen coin. Petals of the flower, end to end measure a tad larger.

Water Lillies of Guwahati
We were recently at Guwahati India (where the Assam tea originate from). It was not a holiday as we were there for some cleft related work.

A stroll around the hotel's compound brought me to this little pond with water lily. The brilliant colours of the smallish water plants was a waste to not capture on camera. Good subject for a bit of outdoor photography.

A Walk @ Pasar Seni - Round 2

Elected to walk around Pasar Seni area again during Diwali. It was hot, bright yet breezy in the shades. Went there with another couple . . . had a good time. I would like explore that area again for photography purposes and spend more time to pause and compose.

Meanwhile, here are some pics. All on a single lens shod on the old Z6 body.

A Walk @ Pasar Seni
A colleague invited me for a walk around KL's Central Market (Pasar Seni). It was an offer not to be missed as I have not been around Pasar Seni for years.
I was busy and had to create a break in my schedule . . . it was however, worth it. I am not good at street photography as I have not had much exposure in that area. That Pasar Seni trip was a good test esp in terms of what lens to bring next time round. The 70-200 was too bulky (but good). Next trip will bring two primes . . . 50 1.8 and 105 MC 2.8.

Looking forward to another walkabout

Pulau Pangkor Sunset

Despite being born in Perak with the paternal grandparents living in Sitiawan, I have never set foot on Pulau Pangkor. The closest was Lumut.

That is . . . until the recent short school break. Visiting an island means hoping to catch some glorious sunrise or sunset. The place where we stayed was better positioned for sunsets. We were also lucky that day 1 presented a vibrant sunset with deep colours. The 2nd day was the total opposite with downcast sky.

I was thus happy to catch the sunset when it appeared. To travel light, I did not bring a tripod . . . pics had to be taken playing with speed, aperture and iso . . . and a tree stump for stability. Turned out reasonably ok.

Death, an Opportunity

We typically think of death as an end.

Not necessarily so in the animal kingdom. Death of one is an opportunity for many others. That’s the scene provided by the tiny sand crabs of Pangkor Island. I stumbled upon a dead crab by chance. It was a shot I had to take.

It was timely too as within mere minutes of doing so, a living crab pulled away the carcass into its sandhole. One moment, it served as food for the flies, another moment it became food for the opportunistic sand crab.

Death has its purpose and usefulness.

Photography = Patience

Equipment wise, photography requires a good body paired with a good lens. It also requires the photographer to display some sense of creativity.

That said, there is one other element . . . patience, especially when capturing wild life. Small creatures are particularly difficult as they would scuttle away when you approach them. Their small size create another layer of challenge as a normal lens would not provide the coverage. Being on a family vacation, I did not bring any telephoto lens thus adding to the challenging circumstances.

With that in mind, here are some shots of small sandcraps (ghost craps), typically 1-3 cm in size. Requires a form of stakeout . . . holding still for minutes so that when they do come out of the safety of their “homes”, the shutter is released. Yes . . . patience is definitely needed.

Bunga Telang

A plant that grows very easily, with a distinct bluish/purplish flower. It's a vine as it creeps up fences and reproduce through pods (when flowers are not plucked).

Also known as butterfly pea (or scientifically, clitoria ternatea or others depending on variants), the flowers are used in tea, nasi kerabu, cakes, cocktails etc. Basically anything that needs a bluish colour to the food or drinks. I brought some pods from our kebun and geminated them at USJ. They grew real quick and produced abundant flowers daily.

Here are some pics of the "Bunga Telang"
