Apart from tusks which evolve from incisor teeth, the only other dentition elephants have is a set of twenty-four molars, situated in lots of six on each side of the upper and lower jaws. These molars appear in progression through the animal's life, so that as one is worn away, the remaining part moves forward in the socket and the next comes into use from behind it. Thus only one or two teeth are in use and visible at any one time, on each side of the jaws. Once the lasts set of teeth has been worn away the elephant becomes incapable of chewing up sufficient food to keep itself alive, this occurring at about 55 to 60 years old. This old female is a prime example of just such an elephant living in her last days.
