People communicate long before they speak.

I once photographed two different couples for pre-wedding sessions.

With one couple, the laughter came naturally. They teased each other, smiled effortlessly, and made my job easy.

With the other, something felt different. One person seemed a little more reserved, and every smile looked like it needed encouragement.

Did that tell me everything about their relationship?

Of course not.

A photoshoot is just a moment in time, and people can be shy, nervous, tired, or simply uncomfortable in front of a camera.

But it reminded me that photographers observe more than poses.

We notice the little glances, the comfortable silence, the playful teasing, the reassuring hand on a shoulder, and the way people make each other feel.

The longer I do this job, the more I realize that photography teaches a lot more than photos.

It teaches you to pay attention to people. Do you pay attention to people?
