ASHURA AND FASTING - Detailed explanation :)
9th Muharram = 27th July 2023 | Thursday
10th Muharram = 28th July 2023 | Friday
11th Muharram = 29th July 2023 | Saturday
The Prophet,(sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam), said:
“For fasting the day of ‘Ashura, I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before.”
[Reported by Muslim, 1976]
Don’t forget to observe fasting on the day preceding Ashura which is Taasu’a (9th of Muharram) or succeeding it (the 11th of Muharram) to be different from the Jews.
Ibn `Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, “If I remain alive till the next year, I shall also observe fast on the ninth of Muharram (i.e. along with the tenth day.).”
[Muslim]
You have 4 options.
Fast 9th and 10th (2 days)
Or
Fast 10th only (1 day)
Or
Fast 10th and 11th (2 days)
or
Fast 9th,10th and 11th (all 3 days)
WHY?
‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) fasted on the day of ‘Ashura and told the people to fast, they said, “O Messenger of Allaah, this is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.” The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Next year, if Allaah wills, we will fast on the ninth day.” But by the time the following year came, the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had passed away.
(Muslim, 1916)
Al-Shaafa’i and his companions, Ahmad, Ishaaq and others said: It is mustahabb [recommended] to fast both the ninth and the tenth, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) fasted the tenth and intended to fast the ninth.
Based on this, there are different ways of fasting ‘Ashura’, the least of which is to fast the tenth only, but it is better to fast the ninth as well. The more one fasts in Muharram, the better.
