In preparation for the photography road trip across West and East Africa, I spent 6 enriching weeks at the Ebedi International Writers Residency in Iseyin, Oyo State. While there, I also volunteered as an art teacher at a local secondary school, sharing creative ideas and encouraging young minds to express themselves through art.
These are some of the moments captured and works created by my amazing students during that inspiring time. I am grateful for the experience, the connections, and the stories we created together.

I decided to go on this road trip after realizing something strange — it’s often more expensive to fly from one African country to another than it is to fly from Africa to Europe, America, or even Asia.

On top of that, you need a visa to visit almost every country on the continent.

The African Union has talked for a long time about making it easier for Africans to move freely across borders, but in reality, that goal still feels far away.

In 2018 and 2019, as part of my personal artistic practice, I embarked on a bold and beautiful journey I titled “Open Africa.”

Starting from Ibadan, Nigeria I set out on a photography road trip across West and East Africa, passing through major cities in the Republic of Benin, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Senegal, Gambia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi.

Along the way, I collaborated with local artists, schools, NGOs, and youth centres — facilitating photography workshops, artist talks, exhibitions, and building lasting creative networks.

It was a journey of faith, freedom, and purpose
