HIGHLIGHTING GRASSROOTS LEADERSHIP & RESPONSIBLE GOVERNANCE
Many people often ask, “What exactly does a councillor do?”
This is one clear example.
Maintaining peace, orderliness, and harmony within our communities is one of the core responsibilities of elected leaders at the grassroots.
At the ward level, the councillor serves as the first citizen of the ward, while the chairman remains the first citizen of the LCDA.
In line with this responsibility, Hon. Kayode Obaleye, Councillor representing Ward F and Deputy Majority Leader, Agbado Oke Odo LCDA, joined Hon. Kehinde Shobayo (Sheu), Vice Chairman of Agbado Oke Odo LCDA, acting on behalf of the Council Chairman, Hon. Jimoh Ishola Ejigbadero, in a meeting with key stakeholders in the Mosalasi axis of Agbado, recently.
The meeting involved members of the Landlords’ Association in the area and leaders of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), who also serve as local security operatives in the community, alongside a small-scale business operator who has occupied the space for a long time. According to the landlords’ association, the continued occupation of the area has affected water flow, disrupted the drainage system, and slowed down development within the community, noting that the current arrangement has become a subject of concern to the landlords’ association.
Situations like this require careful handling. The OPC chapter involved is one of the oldest in Lagos and has played an important role in securing lives and property over the years. At the same time, community development must continue.
Rather than allowing the matter to escalate, dialogue and engagement were adopted. All parties were given the opportunity to express their views, with the shared goal of reaching a peaceful and fair solution that serves the interest of the entire community.
Dialogue remains ongoing, and it was agreed that the Vice Chairman and his team will return to the community in the coming week for further engagement, to review the situation on ground and work towards an amicable resolution acceptable to all parties involved.
This is the kind of quiet but important work Hon. Kayode Obaleye continues to do — engaging stakeholders, preventing conflict, and promoting orderliness in Ward F through dialogue and understanding, even though this aspect of leadership often goes unnoticed.
