‘In control.’

Controle is een illusie. Maar hoe laat je het los?

Ik kijk naar mij. Hoe ik worstel met controle, hoe ik me verschuil.
Mijn werk is een continu controleren en loslaten.
Kijken en niet gezien willen worden.

I look at myself. At my struggle with control, at how I hide.
My work is a continuous controlling and letting go.
Looking, and not wanting to be seen.

We leven in een wereld waar iedereen en alles zichtbaar is.
Maar eigenlijk zijn we nog nooit zo onzichtbaar geweest .

We live in a world in which everyone and anything is visible,
all the time. But ironically,at the same time,
we have never been more invisible.

My work on Makeable Landscapes is about a number of special locations in the Netherlands that are being developed. "Makeable" is something that can be arranged, manufactured or shaped according to your own wishes or ideology. For these projects I am looking for places where I experience this tangible. The shape that people have given to landscapes can surprise me and appeal to me. By omitting or minimizing the landscape is better reflected. I wish to capture this in tranquil and spatial images.

Het is 20/02/2020. De veranderingen kwamen eerder dan verwacht. Weken hitte en droogte. Nachten 37,8C. Geen water en elektriciteit.

It is 20/02/2020. The changes occurred sooner than expected. Three weeks heat and drought. 37,8C/100F in the night. No water and electricity.

There have been various moments throughout my life that the universe has surprised and touched me with the extreme beauty of its magical appearance. A deceleration of time and a profound sense of true connection to the entire world; always unexpected, but certainly leaving an indelible memory. These moments are becoming fewer and further between as rhythm of daily life takes over. I retrace them by being conscious of living in the here and now.
With silence and objectivity in mind and leaving behind the preconceived concepts of how the world should look like, I photograph the beauty and wonder of the moment.

Images along the way
Most of our traveling experiences have nothing to do with the goal of our journey. We see uninspiring streets, grassland and cars. Wouldn’t it be more fulfilling, to enjoy normal streetscapes, instead of enduring endless cues to enter museums, where everyone has already been?
Erik’s travelling memories are about common things, photographed in his own way.

�In the staged reality of my photography, I’m able to eliminate time, allowing the past to flow into the present. This results in the depiction of two worlds in a single photograph. Where there is so much more to discover than what is observed at first sight.

Dreams, in which images, colours, sounds and stories play out in my mind really fascinate me. A world you recognize, but is sometimes alienating. My images are short glimpses of another dimension, a world that does not exist and yet it does.
