Becoming an Ocean | 2020

At the end of last year I started a weekly creative meetup with some friends. I realised many of us kept saying the same thing. We wanted to create but finding the time to dedicate to our projects was difficult.

And so C R E A T E was born. Hosted by a new person each week with a new venue in the city. We ventured to the public library, hotel bars, our homes and co-working spaces.

We chatted, made new connections, ate together, inspired and motivated each other. For me, the few hours we carved out in the week became something to look forward to. I craved that Wednesday evening get together.

It's been many months since we last met but I decided to wrap up the collages I was working on.

I wanted to have something tactile to work on. Using printed photos from my archive and magazine clippings I wanted the process to take precedence over the final product.

It's been a tough week knowing you're gone. Being far away from home while so many incredible people grieve their loss.

My mentor. My friend.

You were a giver. A giver of time, always generous. A giver of knowledge, you loved to share.

I've spent the last, almost, week trying to write down memories we shared. All the times you were by my side sharing in your lust for life. I can't believe it all started 2014. It seems like another lifetime now. It wasn't long enough.

You were the "adventure man". My go to DOP when I knew there would be running around, helicopters, bungee jumps, rock climbing, cycle tours, zorbing, soccer pitches, factory tours, skating.

You were always too tall for your own good. Bumping your head on things, tripping over yourself. I remember clearly when these moments happened. I was always worried about you getting injured on set.

We laughed together, we learnt together, we stressed together and managed to enjoy so many wonderful moments and for that I'm grateful.

Over time we developed our friendship. We developed trust. It was a two way street. One where we looked out for each other. I knew I could call you up on a Saturday morning and you'd rush over in your car to help me out with whatever I needed. You knew you could reach out to me when you needed help, like that time you didn't have a working Mac to edit on. We could count on each other, no questions asked.

So many people counted on you. My heart breaks thinking about the giant hole in everyone's lives. An extra large, Dirk-shaped hole.

For these photos of .sensky I wanted them to feel intimate, with dynamic natural light. Think it worked?

It's always a privilege to be able to come into someone's personal space to try and capture them.

This inspiring human was generous enough to give his time and tell his story. It's colleagues like that remind me how lucky I am to work where I do. Where we have a culture of openness, acceptance and support. All over the globe.
