De lange Jan, De ouwe Wester, the pride of the Jordaan.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍 The Netherlands⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Built in 1637 and the landmark of our time: The Westerkerk in Amsterdam. Its bells were heard by Anne Frank and described in her diary when she and her family had been in hiding for only three days. Het Achterhuis where the family spent almost two years in hiding was right behind the Westerkerk.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
‘'Vader en moeder kunnen niet wennen aan het klokgelui van de Westertorenklok, die ons elk kwartier de tijd aangeeft. Ik niet, ik vond het vanaf het begin leuk. Het klinkt geruststellend, vooral 's nachts.’

After Rotterdam was destroyed in 1940, the city government wanted to break with the past. Instead of reconstructing the old city, they opted for a spacious layout and modern architecture in the reconstruction. Besides the typical reconstruction architecture of the sixties, seventies and eighties, you will find different architecturestyles with tall buildings. Air, light and space, that was the motto.

From Parish of Misery to Fashionable Antiques District.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sint-Andries was a poor working-class area in Antwerp with a high population density. Everyone lived in close proximity, with families of ten or more people in one room, old and unhealthy hovels for living, and most of the time, people lived in the streets, which created good friends but also violence and fights. Mainly craftsmen, shopkeepers and dockers lived there. But it is the same district where Emperor Charles V once stayed and where Napoleon Bonaparte had his shipyards built. Due to the crisis in the 1930s and the Second World War, the residents moved to social housing. Between the 1970s and 1980s, students and fashion designers moved in, and the old dance halls are now home to large antique shops.

Medieval fairytale.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍 Germany⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Burg Eltz is an authentic medieval castle that was built in the 12th century. Its unique setting on an oval rock, surrounded by woodlands gives the castle a fairytale and magic appearance. Due to its location, the castle could not be expanded horizontally. The rock builds the foundation, that's why it grew only in height.

Naarden is a very strong defensive structure of the Netherlands and is one of the best preserved fortified towns in Europe. The fortress was granted its city rights in 1350 and has six bastions, a double wall and double moats. The fortress formed the northernmost part of the Dutch Waterline. This was a continuous series of military fortifications and flooded polders in the flat surroundings.

Bastion Nieuwe Molen.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍 The Netherlands⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Bastion Nieuw Molen has recessed curved flanks on two levels. Below the parapets at the front of the bastion are 17th-century cannon cellars with listening holes. During the renovation of the fortress in 1877, a laboratory and ammunition depot were built on the central grounds of the bastion. In order to restore the bastion to its original 17th-century condition, these buildings were demolished in the 1950s. Far from restoring the old state of affairs, however, this demolition only paved the way for the current layout as a car park.

Winding river, mountains and wine.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍 Germany⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Moselle River is known for its large loops and forms the dividing line between two low mountain ranges, the Hunsruck on the right bank and the Eifel on the left bank. In addition, a leading wine-growing region is located along the river. The history of viticulture on the Moselle dates back to the beginning of the 4th century. At the instigation of Charlemagne, around 800, a selection of the best grapes and the best locations, combined with strict legislation for winegrowers and merchants, was decisive for the creation of a quality region.

The start of the Tulip season.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📍 The Netherlands⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are some confusions that tulips come from The Netherlands. The Tulip was actually originally a wild flower growing in Iran, Afghanistan and Turkey. Around 1550 the palace gardens of Sultan Süleyman were filled with the most beautiful tulips. Sometimes he gave tulip bulbs as gifts to important guests. The flowers were introduced into the Netherlands in the late 16th century, by the biologist Carolus Clusius. In the 1590s, Clusius became the director of the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden, the oldest botanical garden of Europe. He was hired by the University of Leiden to research medicinal plants. While doing so, his friend in Turkey, Ogier Ghiselain de Busbecq, the ambassador of Istanbul, had seen the beautiful tulip flowers growing in the palace gardens, and so sent a few to Clusius for his garden in Leiden. How beautiful and how rare they were, Carolus did not sell them. One night, thieves stole tulips from the garden. This was the beginning of the tulip and bulb trade in the Netherlands. The interest for the flowers was huge and bulbs were sold for ridiculous prices.
