what would you actually do if you had to start from zero again?

i had a call with a photographer from new zealand yesterday and she had one of those dreams that sounds insane until you actually map it out

her goal: become a full-time photographer who takes people hiking for two, three days into the mountains for shoots.

the problem: she's just starting. no clients. no idea how to get them.

i spend $1500 on my camera so my coaching calls look like a netflix special

it wasn't. the real skill wasn't the gear. it was making strangers feel safe enough to drop their shoulders and breathe. reading the room. leading them through awkward silence. making them forget the lens was even there. i justified my low rates because the equipment was expensive. camera, lenses, lighting rig. thought that's what clients paid for. but the second everyone had access to good cameras, the floor dropped out for people who thought that way. the photographers who survived weren't the ones with the best gear. they were the ones who built confidence, presence, the ability to guide someone through discomfort. that's the specialty. that's what people actually paid for. same thing happened when i moved into consulting. same thing happens to every coach, designer, consultant who thinks their tools are the value. the tool is never the value. the value is what you do with it that no one else can.

i showed him how to turn the phone in his pocket into a studio camera.

PINNAH. i just watched a guy break the autofocus on three cameras in a nightclub because he thought gear would solve his confidence problem. still shooting in auto. still hiding behind the bar between shots because he didn't know what to say to the bride. the camera isn't the bottleneck. neither is the lens, the preset pack, or the lightroom course. it's the fact that you're waiting for permission to act like the photographer you want to be. you think one more piece of equipment will give you that permission. it won't. i just knew what i was doing and didn't apologize for charging what i was worth. you already have everything you need to win. you're just waiting for external proof before you believe it yourself. stop waiting.
