- Zelf liep ik de 5K. Was je sneller dan ik (25:20 + ~7-8 min uitrusttijd), dan sta je er bij mij dus helaas niet op. Wellicht wel bij de andere finishfotograaf Desmond > De Hardloop Fotograaf.

- Sta je er sowieso niet op? Dan kan het zijn dat je achter iemand liep (we kunnen zelfs anno 2026 nog steeds niet door mensen heen fotograferen helaas) OF je was gewoon te snel. Excuses in dat geval: volgende keer let ik beter op.

LIGHTNING IN A CLOUD • This might just be the very BEST weather photo I've EVER taken so far! Especially if you consider the fact that this has been taken...
..from the airplane window!

The story

Right after lift-off from New Delhi 🇮🇳 on the way to Paro 🇧🇹 (5 April 2026, early morning) my plane flew past a lightning storm. In itself and from the ground a lightning storm is already a very cool weather phenomenon, but seeing one from the airplane window at 3-4 km, made this one feel extra special.

Since I always have my camera in the cabin with me this was a great and unique opportunity to take some very special shots. Until this very shot, because there was also the factor of Sheer Dumb Luck. Catching a lightning bolt or even the flash on camera without the use of a trigger, is simply just a matter of luck.

Catching one, tracking a lightning storm in an ascending airplane, going at 800km/h and trying to count, time and pinpoint where lighting was going to strike was... well, a little bit of planning, some experience with the camera and the weather phenomenon and... yes: a big dose of blind luck.

This might be my BEST example of "pushing the button at the exact right time."

I'm in pain. This weekend of shooting broke me. I need a lighter lens with the same (or better) optical specs: I need the 120-300mm f/2.8 RC VR S.

After this weekend the need for a better -and above all: lighter- sports lens is definitely here 🙏🏽🙏🏽 These lenses take a decade to design, develop, engineer and test before they're being finally released to us, the public. I was overjoyed when they officially announced it. However now is a good time to exercise patience because it won't be released for a few months...

Yes. I have the 400/2.8 TC VR S and yes. I also have the 600/4 TC VR S. Both are physically longer, but they are also both lighter than my F mount zoom.

What I'm lacking atm is a serene calm in my neck and shoulders. Both these lenses are actually convenient to shoot with. Why? In the end they do weigh a lot, but still: on the Nikon Z9 both are under 5kg. And that's including the camera body with battery pack installed.

Also: both these super teles are very well-balanced. The weight has been put further to the back. Hence it takes less effort to move them around while shooting.

Since I don't use a monopod -because I found it limiting in terms of flexibility- I handhold these lenses all day long. And yes, I've developed the habit of "when I'm not actually shooting, I put them down." So there's as little 'unnecessary carrying around' as possible.

Yet however awesome they both are: they are primes. Insanely sharp and both the pinnacle of Nikon lens engineering, but for sports: less flexible. The older F mount goes wider and... it's a zoom. It's the missing link in my sports arsenal at the moment. The only problem: the weight. After a full weekend of shooting I feel I need a break.

The newly announced NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S will be smaller. It will have better distributed weight (also no balance shift when zooming). It features the built-in TC. It will be even sharper and above all else... it will be LIGHTER.

I can't weight!

RAIN in photography • Meet Zoey 🏃🏽‍♀️

This bright, young 15 yo competed last Thursday at the most recent edition of the Harry Schulting Games • In photo 2 something really cool is happening: Zoey is a WATER BENDER.

As she was gearing up to run 400m (58,70s), she did a test run. So, naturally, so did I by taking some shots of her. The sun was getting low, hitting the entire scene, enabling a lot of backlight possibilities.

Zoey's start was lightning fast. As the track was still wet from the rain, her hands naturally caught the water and as she put her body in motion to sprint away, she was able to actually... bend water 🌊

Of course that wasn't her goal. Her goal was running a fast 400m. And of course it's "just" physics, but the wet track combined with her super fast motion had this awesome side effect: magic.

sure did an amazing job too, creating the Z9 camera AND the ultimate 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S ultra super tele sports lens. It enabled me to capture her water bending sprinting magic perfectly in exquisite and extremely sharp detail.
