Since the new COVID measure force us to do our activities at home, we have to think of new ways in which we can let our creativity flow. That’s why there will be a three-part self-portrait workshop held, starting off at the 24th of November at 20:00 at Microsoft Teams. Then there will be two more workshops in December: one with professional storytelling artist Lieke Anna, going in depth about the story of the portrait and a last workshop which will be a one-on-one conversation with Lieke Anna during which you will discuss the self-portraits you shot. Now I know what you’re thinking, self-portraits that’s for holidays right? Well think again! The grand Dutch masters like Van Gogh and Rembrandt were already taking self-portraits way back when. It was a way of testing out new lighting situations, ways of expression and also a general exercise. Going back to the 70s and 80s, Cindy Sherman critiqued the Hollywood industry with her self-portrait series “Untitled film stills”. Self-portraits are perfect to keep your creativity flowing. If you can't find the time to shoot other subjects just do it with yourself. That’s the only resource that will always be there. And what’s more, in this first workshop you will learn how to practice all of this in your own student room! If you don't know how to direct yourself in photos how will you ever know how to direct others?
