We were driven into the famous Black Forest area, where we saw (for sale!) the handicrafts that have made this area popular--cuckoo clocks, music boxes, beer steins, etc.

Basel is the furthest upstream that the tour boats can travel; we were expecting to board here, but our ship had some mechanical problems and had to stop in Breisach, our "next" stop. Basel is a beautiful city of about 200,000 people (slightly larger than Fort Collins). We saw a lot --old and new--in our two days here.

I eliminated one item from my bucket list on August 21, driving to Central Wyoming to photograph the total solar eclipse. Ginny and I left home at 6am and drove to Laramie via US 287, then west on US 30 to Medicine Bow, WY, then north on WY 487 to within about 30 miles of Casper, which was right in middle of the zone of totality. The zone was 70 miles wide, or 35 miles both north and south from Casper; I estimated that we would be in the zone at our location, and fortunately we were! Technical notes: images were taken with a Canon SX 60, my everyday camera, which has a lens that zooms from 21mm to 1365mm. The camera was mounted on a tripod, and a cable release was used to avoid blurring from motion of the camera when releasing the shutter manually. A Mylar solar filter was used to cut down the amount of light from the sun. Additionally I spent several days before the eclipse practicing by making images of the sun; adjustment of the tripod was required for each image because of the earth's motion.

The drive north took about three hours, however, the return trip took seven-and-a-half hours: the population of Wyoming is said to have doubled for the eclipse.
