Golden morning ✈️

One of the benefits, or perhaps downsides of flying is; sunrises. For me it is a benefit, I absolutely love the moment when the sun rises and turns everything golden. This morning we landed during sunrise and the sky was absolutely on fire for nearly 30 minutes.

Work work 👨‍✈️

A few moments from my last flight to Kuala Lumpur in the Boeing 787-9. The morning light is never boring with beautiful shadowplay. Over Türkiye we saw a bright Milky Way since there was no moon, this is still one of my favorite to capture from the flight deck. The second Milky Way was shot during a turn which gives quite a cool perspective.

Aviation Highway 🛣️

Flying back from Asia, we as aviators don’t have many options due to a lot of airspace closures. Therefore a lot of traffic flies over the same so called airways. For me it’s a pleasant sight, firstly because you don’t feel so alone in the air at 38000ft, and secondly because it creates beautiful scenery. The first image is an A380 wizzing by and the second one a Cargolux B747.

Taipei airport ✈️

I think this might be a photographer and aviators dream photo, at least for me it is. Going out to shoot during a layover is always fun, but when you can combine your passion with your work it becomes even better. In this photo you see everything, from local culture with the temple, photography technique with compression and my work, a plane wizzing by! Missing this shot 5 times and finally getting it was a frustrating but also great experience.

Border-line 💡

One of those incredible sights you get from the flight deck at cruising altitude. A border completely lit up, quite incredible. Do you have any idea where this might be ? Let me know in the comments 🤔💬

Forces of nature 🌩️

Swipe for the full shot ➡️ (which is better 😂) .While departing Cartagena, Colombia we knew there were some thunderstorms in the area. On the ground I decided to place all my settings correctly for capturing lightning in clouds and stored the camera. When we where clear of the weather and at a safe distance we could enjoy the show from the flightdeck, and wow what a spectacle. In this shot you can see the lightning clearly lighting up the coastline and also a microburst, which is a strong downdraft of wind and rain. It’s astonishing to me that the .benelux 35mm F1.4 with the A7cII is able to capture this so sharp.

Flightdeck sunset 🌅

I’m always in a happy place when the sun sets during a flight, simply because the light and the views are the best. You can see the whole world beneath you turn pitch black and moments before witness golden hour turn in to blue hour in the sky. What a job, what a view. 👌

Ploefie ☁️

Flying to South American destinations gives a great opportunity to witness amazing cloud build ups - like these ploefies near Cartagena, Colombia. Good thing that we can see them on our weather radar and during the day with our eyes so we can avoid flying through these monsters, they will surely throw us around if we go through them.

Have you seen some beautiful clouds lately? In the Netherlands it’s just grey and overcast so not much to see unfortunately.

Day at the office.

A few of the beautiful sights we encountered while cruising for 6800nm to Buenos Aires in the 787-9. The sun was slowly rising and it created a beautiful blue hour sight with the stars shining bright over the thunderstorms. This flight is one of the longest flights we have on our long haul fleet, although Asia with the closure of the Russian airspace is about the same nowadays. I left my home at 1830 and arrived in the hotel around 1315 the next day, quite the trip! After a few hours of sleep I ended up with a classical Argentinian dish - Lomo Entero. Ask me anything about this flight if you’re interested 👌

Little disclaimer, it’s totally fine if there is one pilot in the seat - how else would we go to the toilet 🚽? 😁

Dancing Greens 🥦

Happy New Year 🎊! Starting of 2024 with one of my longest encounters with the northern lights / Aurora Borealis. It was on the way back from Tokyo, flying to Amsterdam via an easterly route over the North Pole. This route is shorter nowadays due to the closure of the Russian airspace. In the winter time the northern lights are basically a given on this specific route, and I was lucky enough to see it for 3 hours straight! It’s an absolute magical feeling to witness the dancing greens for so long, especially when you have a camera with you. Have you ever seen it? The second image is actually the lights in the distance and we were flying towards it.

I shot all these on my .nederland A7CII & ZV-E1.

Few flight details - the block time was 13h43, on the 777-200, max altitude 37.000ft covering +/- 6600 nm.

Pakistan 🇵🇰

Two images from the beautiful high terrain in Pakistan near the border of Afghanistan. During sunrise it might be one of the prettiest sights around and it def makes me want to pull the speedbrake to have a bit more time to witness the beauty.

By the way, any clue what the function of the speed brake is 😳🤷?
