As you walk down the steps of Rotterdam Central Station towards the metro, if you look up, you'll see a big quote credited to Rotterdam philosopher Erasmus. It says "ruimte scheidt de lichamen, niet de geesten". For those whose Dutch is not that sharp, much like mine when I first spotted this, it translates to "space separates bodies, not minds".
This spoke very close to my heart, as my love story with my Dutch boyfriend began with an ocean between us most of the time.
Throughout the years I've met many couples that have had (or still do) a similar story. And although technology has provided us with ways of making that distance feel a bit smaller, I feel like nothing fully replaces the comfort of being in your loved one's arms. When the distance is finally bridged, and you find yourselves standing face to face, there's a profound sense of belonging and connection that washes over you.
Erasmus' words continue to resonate with me, reminding me that physical space may separate us physically, but our emotional bonds can be as powerful as oceans.
So, to all the couples out there who have experienced or are still experiencing the challenges of long-distance love, I want to remind you that your connection goes beyond the miles. Embrace the moments you have together, cherish the memories you've built, and hold onto the hope that one day, the space that separates you will be a thing of the past.
Do you want to tell me your love stories, triumphs, and struggles in the comments below? Let's celebrate the resilience and power of love in bringing hearts together, no matter the distance.
