Paulo passed away in a hospital in Amsterdam, in the early morning of Tuesday, April 14. His passing was caused by a spontaneous cerebral haemorrhage which happened the evening before.

On Thursday, April 23, starting 16h30, we hold a memorial gathering at KABK in PB.111, where we welcome everyone who can and would like to attend to be together in memory of Paulo.

Featured project: Year 2 student Leon Griessmayr .leon โ€˜F*ucking Clever Guide to Face Recognitionโ€™.

Leon: โ€˜On average, I unlock my iPhone 107 times a day.
Each time, it captures infrared images of my face and compares them to a database created two years ago. For a long time, I thought this was magic. How could it recognize me with new hairstyles, glasses, or a mask, and pick me out of eight billion people?
The truth is simpler and stranger: the camera turns my face into geometrical data points. Each unlock updates a continuous feedback loop, teaching the system how I look in everyday scenarios. While this felt personal and human it actually is raw data, part of a vast network of recognition.

In this project, l use self-portraiture to explore how computers โ€˜seeโ€™ me and how facial recognition systems interpret my images. Through the process, I also experiment with ways to hide from these systems, investigating how everyday visibility can be disrupted and how privacy might be reclaimed in a world shaped by algorithmic vision.

How does the way computers โ€˜seeโ€™ shape how we are monitored and represented in everyday life?โ€™

(Somewhat belated) Congratulations to Year 3 student Eliza Kabila on winning Wild Cherry award from Research Labs of Eye Filmmuseum for her short film โ€ždo you know what the colour green means?โ€.
โ€จFollowing estranged uncle in her native Poland, Eliza crafts a raw and intimate video work that confronts a harsh reality of aftermath of addiction, depression and misjudgement at the core of the subjectโ€™s life.
โ€จfrom the jury report:โ€จโ€œ [โ€ฆ] It is a visually clever film, with a lot of attention to the surroundings, combined with a personal yet recognisable story about a family situation. The film ticked both the narrative and visual boxes, and did so in an almost cosmically connecting way. Everything felt right to us, and that is why this is the winner.โ€

Hello everyone,

My name is Negin Kazemi. I am an Iranian artist based in The Hague and currently studying photography at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Working primarily with photography, my practice moves between image, archive, and narrative to investigate how personal experience can become a space for critical reflection

These photographs are part of a larger body of work I began in 2021. It explores the intricate interplay of love, resistance, transformation and banishment under the Islamic Republic of Iranโ€™s dictatorship. This work delves into how political power infiltrates the most intimate aspects of life shaping memory, desire, belonging and identity. Through family archival materials self-portraits and storytelling, I reflect on how personal and inherited narratives are formed, fractured and reclaimed under ideological control.

This work views the intimate as a contested political space. It questions how authoritarian violence permeates everyday life and how collective memory and cultural inheritance might unite what oppression seeks to divide. Consequently, it approaches personal narrative not merely as testimony but as a site of resistance reclaiming forms of selfhood and history that predate and transcend the regimeโ€™s attempts to redefine them.

The Cockroach collective is a group of 45 students infesting the landscape of photography and exploring the possibilities of the medium to go beyond traditional definitions. Our exhibition UNFOLDING TERRITORIES: Co-creating Through Cartographies of Care is expanding the definition of care aiming at the broader understanding of what care means in the contemporary world and how art can be seen as a manifestation and tool of care.

The act of creation is an act of care, creating work is a movement towards an expression of one's honest desire to connect with others. In our exhibition, we would like to share what we care about, in the ever-changing world that surrounds us.

We have been driven to create an exhibition where everyone, the audience and the artists, felt seen and listened to. At our core, we are guided by equality, inclusivity, and respect. The willingness to take care of one another is a representative trait of our time when we all need additional support. These turbulent years are reflected in the ways we create work and the themes we explore. Furthermore, we want to challenge photography and explore it as a means of care to reflect our world today.

With Unfolding Territories: Co-creating Through Cartographies of Care, we create a physical space that carries a proposition. What if creation is an act of care?

You are invited to start a dialogue about what care could mean in society, betting on the idea that art can be truly transformative if it comes from a place of love, respect, and curiosity for the other.

On Thursday, the Network Week will be concluded with a great lecture moderated by Katarina Juriฤiฤ‡ with special guests Bieke Depoorter and Mame-Diarra Niang! The questions โ€˜What does it mean to be a photographer nowadays?โ€™ and โ€˜How does the medium evolve based on the contemporary debate?โ€™ will be put central in the discussion. We encourage you to join this discussion online, Thursday 13 January at 11:00 CET. The link to the meeting will follow later in your KABK mail.
