Soft Charge 🟢 静電気

One year ago I was in Tokyo for a residency where I produced a short as a result of experimenting with infrared film.

“Music and the Land.” drawing on the rhythms, cycles, and interconnectedness of nature, technology, and cultural heritage.

Thanks to (CEO, Harpist) and Sir John Eliot Gardiner (Conductor, Organic Farmer) for inviting us to their land and introducing us to their organisation where music, ecology, and imagination meet – with performances, conversations, and a musical pilgrimage through the gardens.

Can the aura of a work of art be captured?
𝗔𝘂𝗿𝗮 by Gabriela Acha, tries to find out.

Together with my dad — who rebuilt a custom high-voltage setup inspired by the original Kirlian camera (developed in the early 1900s to photograph the energetic field of living and non-living matter) — they reimagined this experiment.

⚡ Coins, leafs, jewelry — every material reacted differently when exposed to the electric discharge. Some pulsed. Some resisted. Some glowed like tiny storms.

I filmed the process, and I’m sharing a few stills here.

ʏɴꜰʀᴀ 🪨To achieve this metallic, almost inverted look we pushed our tools to the edge — combining infrared footage with drone, underwater camera and hydrophone recordings, stretching optical-flow slow motion until it broke apart.

We went out there ourselves, witnessing the tides swallow sandbanks into sea — and spit them back out again.

ʏɴꜰʀᴀ by Hedwich Rooks explores the invisible pulse of the Zuidwal Volcano — a 300-million-year-old volcano buried two kilometers beneath the Wadden Sea.

Through volcanic stone, infrared light and video footage from monitoring sites like Mount Etna and a performative action above the hidden crater itself, the installation transforms the exhibition space into a glowing geological sensor.

We collaborated on the video part 🎥
Exhibited at Tresoar, Fryslân’s archive and museum.

I admire Ioanas contagious creative drive. It seems almost impossible how many works she produces in such a short time. Her sense of humor and perseverance is truly heroic and inspiring.

𝕄𝔸𝕐 𝔹𝔼 - 𝘕𝘰 𝘗𝘭𝘦𝘹𝘶𝘴 🟢 To get this orbiting effect right, we tested frame rates, timing, and even calculated how fast our camera assistant should run — yes, we went that far.

After tests at and outside on the grass, we realized: over-planning kills the vibe. So we just went for simple clicktrack instructions but mostly to just flow — shoot, preview, shoot again.

Control vs. flow 🐂 They may be right? May… be.

𝙴𝚎𝚛𝚜𝚝𝚎 𝚂𝚞𝚋𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚌𝚔 📗 Techniek en podiumtradities zijn decennialang gedomineerd door mannen, maar langzaam ontstaat een verschuiving. Vrouwen stappen de crew in, de regie, de spot.

Ik geef mijn reflectie op die beweging – vanuit de lens waarmee ik film, en de ogen waarmee ik observeer. Dit is geen analyse, maar een ervaringsverslag. Vanuit de frontlinie, tussen de pyro's.
