Every veteran carries their own story with them.
In this quiet morning a new chapter begins.

During Veterans Day, I followed my father. He had joined the group of Moluccan veterans who were supposed to march together. This did not happen due to the weather conditions. But fortunately, the NOS organized a gathering for a report. This allowed the group to pay tribute to the first generation of KNIL soldiers, who unfortunately never received recognition for their service.

It was a big moment for everyone. Also for my father. He had been deployed to Lebanon by royal order in 1979. This deployment had an impact on the course of his life, and on ours as well. But also on his sense of belonging. He said he would rather return to Lebanon than the Moluccas.

But since contact with the Veterans, he has begun to delve deeper and deeper into the history of his roots. And he felt strongly that, just like the other veterans, he wanted to pay tribute.

But during that day, I saw more. Shared experiences, firm handshakes, truly seeing each other, laughter and tears.

I think he felt as an outsider for many years, till that moment. In the warm presence of the group, he opened up more and came a little bit home.

Where the boats arrive, memories return 🐚

They stood by the quay, waiting for the dragon boats to arrive.
Surrounded by family and loved ones, people waited together as memories slowly surfaced during the waiting.

One woman shared her story:

“Just after we arrived, our father told me and my little brother to stay there and wait until he came back.
Our mother had given birth during the voyage and had to be taken to the hospital.
Our father had to sort out matters on board. (I don’t know if they had already been released from duty at that point.)

We were given an apple and we stood there for hours.
Just the two of us, little kids.”

I felt her emotion and the pain of being unseen.
And at that moment I understood the meaning of ceremony and these gatherings. To share a space for these stories to be heared and to be seen and understood for who you are.
