Berta - Spain

"This is about my first international experience that I had in scouting. I was 16 or 17 years old and with my patrol we decided that we wanted to go to an
international camp. We found one in germany so we worked for the whole year to raise money so our parents didn't have to pay for us to go there. We managed to raise
18.000 euros so we went there and we had a partner
group that were taking care of us. They let us stay with them for the camp and it was super nice! It was our first international experience and we got to discover a lot of cultures and we were super pumped to show everyone
our culture and the typical things that we did back home. It was very nice because every night at the subcamp we had a big fire and we could show a different game or a different tradition that we had and we also made lots of new friends. I remember specifically one night that there was a storm alert and the whole camp was evacuated because it wasn't safe to stay there and I remember thousands of scouts leaving the camp with just a sleeping bag and nothing else and everyone was so afraid. We were the only ones happy, trying to make everyone else smile and I have the image of a line of a thousand people and we were running across it and making everyone cheer. We were staying in a gym and everyone was so tired and sleepy and we made everyone stand up and play games so everyone knew who we were."

Marian - Romania

"I am here as a member of the purple team (this is the way we are calling the WOSM team). I am an european volunteer and my main task here is to deliver a workshop for the participants. It’s a drop in activity but the idea is to make rovers aware on how they can influence the european youth sistem or to take part in their countrie's decision making processes. So that’s the hardest part - to make them aware that they can actually change something in their country and afterwards that little change can be adopted at an european level. That’s something really nice to experiment here. They are asking questions like: “If my country says something different from another country can it actually be taken into account?” and my answer is “Yes! but you have to go with that even further, you don’t stop at the national level.”

Mihaela - Romania

"At the end of the day it's all about the people. The changes you undergo, your energy and results all come from the people you work with/ for. Sometimes they put you down just to give you a good reason to do better next time. But regardless of anything else, at the end of the day, the most exciting part is that we work for the generation of tomorrow."

Annika - Germany

"What I love about scouting is the opportunity to meet people you wouldn’t meet if you wouldn’t be a scout. The possibility to make international friendships and to stay in touch with „old“ friends is one of the main reasons for me to stay active in scouting even though I’m not active at my local scout group anymore. I used to be a RoverRepresentative for my association at the roverway in Finland in 2012 and I met the other representatives one year before the actual event. We were involved in planning and had some good discussions but as the roverway was over, most of us RoverReps didn’t want to loose touch with each other. So we decided to meet up every year in our home countries. Since now I visited seven countries for our reunion and I know the friendship I have with the other RoverReps will last a lifetime."

Beatriz - Portugal

"My scout association in portugal is CNE (there’s another one called AEP and the uniform is similar but there are differences). We wear these socks up to the knee with a wool string called “jarreteira” which is a tradition from a british and very noble Military Order called “Ordem da Jarreteira” where they would put strings on the knights’ to remind them of their mission. Then, we wear a dark blue bottom that can be shorts or a skirt for girls and shorts or trousers for boys (though girls can wear trousers if they want to). We also have our shirt with the badges, our scarf and a belt. The hat is not part of the uniform but we brought it as a symbol. It’s called a “barrete de campino”/“campino hat” and it’s part of the traditional clothes that campinos and forcados used to wear. Campinos were a kind of farmers from a region of Portugal called Ribatejo and they wore the hat to get warmer and also keep their small belongings in it. Forcados are the men who tease the bulls in the bullfights and they still wear their typical uniform including this hat. "

"I chose to paint this message because there are a lot of stereotypes about Italy and I think there are a lot of other stuff besides pizza and mafia. For example scouting and the values of scouting. In Italy there are also a lot of old traditions like the tradition of family. Most of the people only know Italy as the country where you can find pizza, pasta or mafia. So it’s all about the stereotypes."

Rutger - The Netherlands

"The outfit is because it’s nice to give the participants a nice welcome. So we do it in a nice and funny way to give the participants a happy feeling. We give them a bit of attention after a long day because they have to sleep in the sand, in a crowded space so it's like giving them a pat on the shoulder."

When asked about the Listening Ear tent at Roverway 2018 - Opposites Attract
"The participants are going on a trip for 5 days with other culturally different people and when they come back to the main camp they have a story to tell. A lot of people do it within their circle of friends, but others need privacy or someone who will listen and won’t jugde. I am the kind of man who can listen and not judge."

When asked about Roverway2018:
“I think it’s really cool and really fun to meet everyday other people. Just one example: after Roverway, I’m going to Brasil to do my Erasmus and the other day I met a brasilian guy who lives in the same city I will study in and goes to the same university I will be in. It’s such a big world and then in such a big event you meet that one person who’s going to the same place as you for the next 6 months. It’s chance.”

Aishah - Ireland

"One of my guides in Ireland came up with the name 'Boo' and it stuck. They may not remember my name sometimes, but they always remember my hat.

I got it from my mom one year ago. I don’t know when it started coming to guide camps with me. Initially it started because I’m quite short so when I have my guides (my younger brownies from seven to ten year old) a lot of time in crowds they can’t see me. So, they can definitely see the hat and then they started asking me to wear the hat more. In weekly meetings they’d ask “Oh, where’s your hat?”. So when had our Irish international camp last year, I wore it every single day and people then knew me for the hat. If they saw me without the hat they didn’t know who I was or they would ask me where is my hat. We had our summer camp this year and it was too hot, it was 26 degrees in Ireland and that never happens, so it was too hot to wear the hat, but all weekend I had one girl coming after me going like “I know you brought the hat. Where is it? I want to see it. You have to wear the hat.”

Vlad Hodor - Romania

"I find it hard to imagine my life without scouts and scouting now. It's what defined and shaped me as a person. I am what I am because of scouting. The first time when I realized that this is more than just fun and play and that I'm
actually taking part of something big was in 2008 in Alba Iulia, at the "Unitate si Prietenie" festival. Being among 400 other scouts that shared the same values as I did made me feel that I'm not alone and that there are many other scouts
that share the same thing as me: trying to become a better person."

Eric Szanto - Romania

"The big moment for me, when I finally understood scouting, was when one of my patrol colleagues took her rover scout promise and we said our farewells. That's when I understood that scouting means friendship, unity and personal growth."

"Pentru mine, momentul in care am inteles cercetasia a fost momentul in care una dintre colegele mele de patrula si-a depus promisiunea de senior, iar noi ne-am luat "ramas bun" de la ea. Acel monent m-a facut sa inteleg ca cercetasia inseamna prietenie, unitate si evolutie personala"

Giulia Santi - Italy

Short introduction: Giulia and I were in the same patrol at the MOOT this year and the picture was taken while eating our dinner near the lake, as we often did. I asked her what was her hardest goodbye and this was her answer:

"The hardest goodbye was at the moot, when everybody was leaving and I was so sad. The world seemed very little there, in Iceland, because it was near to reach. I was making friends and spending all of my time with people from all over the world. And in a matter of minutes the world was going to be big again. I was saying goodbye to friends saying i would have seen them near in the future but in my heart I had the feeling of a definitive goodbye. It was like "I see you soon" but in my heart was like "maybe i won't be able to see you again, maybe it's the last time". I had found a family in Iceland, I had found my place as Nona there, and it was really difficult and heartbreaking to say goodbye to all of you"
