Summer Lingers

What I assume is a common hoverfly (Syrphus ribesii) on a type of hawkweed (Hieracium), with a marmalade hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus) in the background.

It was taken one September day, so it shows that we can still find some nice insects outside, and that I should still bring my macro lens on my trip to the bird station tomorrow.

Searching the Shore

A busy dunlin (Calidris alpina) to the left, and a sanderling (Calidris alba) to the right, on Jæren another autumn.

Today, I have taken lots of new photos of 16 dunlins, 2 sanderlings and 10 common ringed plovers, foraging on the largest beach on our island.

I lay down by the seaweed and sand for about an hour, and they walked around me at distances of as little as half a metre, busy searching for food.

It is always a wonderful experience to lie there and enjoy the sight and sounds of them at such close range, no matter how many photos I already have of these species.

And especially this year, I wanted some new, good photos because of the big birdwatching year I am having here on our island, and I would like to give a presentation with new photos from it next year.

Now the rest of the day will be spent following our dear King Harald’s funeral on TV, and editing a wedding.

Resting on the Wire

A lot of birds are gathering for migration now. Today, for the first time, I had our new dog with me on the bike in a a new basket, which went really well. It feels better to bring him on my birdwatching, rather than being left alone at home.

We came across a lot of meadow pipits (Anthus pratensis), like this one from the archive, as well as many European goldfinches, whinchats, white wagtails and linnets (stillits, buskskvetter, linerler og tornirisker in Norwegian).

We even had a arctic skua (tjuvjo) flying over us “inland” on the island, rather than out over the ocean.

A Splash of Pink

A white waterlily (Nymphaea alba), specifically the red-flowered variety (Nymphaea alba f. rosea), in Rogaland Arboretum.

This variety was cultivated from plants discovered in Sweden in the early 19th century. The discovery led to large-scale exploitation, which nearly made it extinct in the wild before it was protected.

Where Guillemots Gather

I’m currently finishing a presentation about the birdwatching year I had in Norway in 2025, for BirdLife Jæren next week.

Field Feast in B&W

Another plover species on the fields in our neighbourhood this spring.

It is one of the municipality's second-ever pair of Eurasian dotterels (Eudromias morinellus), found by me.

I was also involved in finding the very first pair, together with a birdwatching friend, even closer to our house two years ago.

On both occasions, they gave me many wonderful photo opportunities before moving on a day and a half later.

This is the female. In this species, the females have the brightest colours and the most striking plumage- the opposite of most other bird species. The more brightly coloured male is the one responsible for incubating the eggs and looking after the young.

Little Lapwing

Even though we have many northern lapwings (Vanellus vanellus) breeding in our neighborhood, I rarely see their chicks.

They are (luckily) good at hiding, although their parents make a lot of noise if anyone gets too close.

But this spring, I spotted this one near the dirt road I was cycling along and took a few quick photos before leaving them alone 🥰

Bold Little Buck

A cute roe deer buck that we met several times during our little walks along the sand dunes at Ogna this summer, while looking for insects and wildflowers to photograph with our macro lenses.

It was curious about our new puppy and came towards us, walking around us rather than running away. It came so close that it filled the frame of my camera.

A Rest in the Rain

A juvenile sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) from a hide in southern Norway some autumns ago.

I highly recommend the photography hides at Åkset Naturfoto in Marnardal! Sparrowhawks and Eurasian jays in autumn, and golden eagles and northern goshawks in winter and spring. Plus small birds, woodpeckers and squirrels as well.

There is rain in the air this weekend as well, but I’ll be indoors rehearsing and enjoying myself with my choir, in my cosy new lovely knitted autumn sweaters.
