Pavla Among the Red Sandstone Cliffs

This image was extracted from a 4K video Pavla and I shot near the Veczemju cliffs on the Vidzeme coast in Latvia in 2023.

The area is known for its striking red sandstone formations, which have been carved by sea waves into steep coastal walls that reach heights of approximately 6 meters.

The visible watermark is part of the original video frame. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the stills held up when pulled from video, especially in terms of detail and tonal depth.

Oh! Tell Me Orb of Truth

Model Nataly captured in a playful and moody setup, seated on an old motorcycle that had somehow found its way into the apartment. The warm glow of a single bulb becomes her “orb of truth,” which I hope adds a theatrical feel to the scene. The motorcycle was never started, but it certainly added character to the session. Shot in November 2022, Riga, Latvia.

Portrait of Nataly in a Chair

This portrait of Nataly was taken in an apartment in Riga during a relaxed indoor session. Though not a studio, I used studio lights to shape the light softly around her, creating a calm, classic look in black and white.

Model: Nataly
Camera: Nikon D810
Lens: Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art
Lighting: Studio lights

Quiet Intensity – Scarlett Dawn

Photographed in Florida in 2019, this portrait of Scarlett Dawn was made using natural light and a restrained setup. I kept the composition simple to let her expression carry the frame.

The shallow depth of field at f/3.5 gives separation without losing detail in the eyes. The softness in the background contrasts with the sharp rendering of the Sigma Art 50mm, which remains one of my most reliable lenses for close portrait work.

Camera: Nikon D810
Lens: Sigma Art 50mm f/1.4
Settings: 1/125 sec, f/3.5, ISO 64
Location: Florida, USA

Expecting – Sinba (2022)

Sinba hadn’t been working as a model for a while, but I asked if she would join me for a short portrait session so I could share an update with the people who kept asking when we might work together again. Over the years we ended up creating a lot of images, and I realised while looking through my archive that I probably have more photos of her than I have of my own family. My goal with this portrait was simply to capture a calm moment and let the red dress carry the frame without overcomplicating anything. I hoped the soft light and the simple background would help keep the focus on her expression and the new chapter she was about to enter.

Model: Sinba
Camera: Nikon D810
Lens: Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art
Exposure: 1/80 sec, f/4.5, ISO 640
Location: Riga, Latvia

Sinba in Evening Light, Gran Canaria

Portrait of Sinba, photographed during our dedicated photo trip to Gran Canaria in 2017.
This image was taken outdoors in soft, fading light, keeping the focus on her expression and styling rather than the surroundings.
Used a flash for fill light

Some sets from this trip are already available on BentBox, with more to be released later.

Light Through Blinds with Sinba

First photo from a road trip Sinba and I had in Italy in 2017.
Originally, we planned to go to Florida, but the flights that fit both our schedules turned out to be far too expensive. Italy, on the other hand, was an easy choice. Sinba flew to Oslo from Riga, I met her there, and we took off together.
This worked perfectly, apart from the photographer who wanted us to meet him in Florida..

This image was taken late at night in a hotel room. I placed a speedlight on a tripod outside the window and partially closed the blinds to get this pattern of light and shadow across her face and shoulder.
