11pm in Iceland is the perfect time to defy TLC and chase waterfalls in that beautiful Golden Hour light. It was nice to be back and take a few pictures, but above all else I loved getting to show one of my absolute favorite places on earth for a day. I truly do not think there is a single ugly corner in Iceland.

Looking forward to being back in North Italy for a few days towards the end of the month. I wish it could be for storm chasing, but I’ll revisit with bolts in mind another time.

A peaceful night in the Adriatic port of Trieste is illuminated by a distant thunderstorm. The thunder at this range was so quiet it was basically a low hum. Moments like this were the epitome of peace on my trip last year.

The Braman, Oklahoma tornado was an absolute work of art. Extremely deviant motion, satellite tornadoes, and massive fluctuations in intensity and morphology made for an event that could only be characterized as absolute insanity. The fact this tornado did minimal damage is nothing short of a miracle and makes it much easier to truly enjoy the fruits of that chase. The day reminded me why patience and a focus on positioning with a 15-minutes ahead sense of planning matter, and I was thrilled to be right where I wanted to be at all times with this storm, and even got to see Enid despite being late. Definitely an April to be remembered.

Hey I just wanted to pop in here and mention, my posts on instagram automatically feed to this page, but I havent had facebook on my phone for months and barely monitor this anymore. I’m not ignoring anyone, just not super active here because my personal fb page is completely inactive. I’ll keep posting updates and pop in if anything particularly important needs to be put out, otherwise I’ll primarily be active on instagram if you need anything. I’ve got about 2-3 weeks left in this season before my schedule makes chasing unlikely, and it seems pretty dead for now, but luckily I’ve already gotten to enjoy some awesome severe weather. We’ll see what else the 2026 season has in store.

Even though this was a tornado day, I was hellbent on getting a powerful lightning barrage from any storm rapidly intensifying in the massive CAPE this setup brought with it. Timing these barrages right is remarkably difficult as it often seems linked with a specific phase of the torgen process, but luckily this one paid off. For two minutes huge bolts flew left and right but two of them landed so perfectly in frame and they were BIGLY. One of them even featured some upward leaders rising out of a tree near the bolt.

Chicago has been getting plenty of storms this year, but the bolts I’m after have been hard to come by. Luckily last night a pre-frontal pop up storm dropped a huge bolt into River North, as the entire rest of the MCS was dead for lightning in the city. We’ll take it.

This year I have had the privilege of testing out a new piece of tech I have wanted in this industry since I started shooting lightning over a decade ago. Lightning triggers of varying strengths have existed for ages, but they all had their sacrifices, and none really made for an all-in-one the way I was hoping for. Then came along with the Bolt Hunter. A fully adjustable lightning trigger with an intervalometer built in, and a smart algorithm that could tune itself to conditions and the camera it was connected to. A relatively inactive August was the only period I was able to truly put it through its paces with daytime lightning, and I still came away with a hundred or so bolts and a hit rate that outmatched anything I’ve ever used before. This thing has been subjected to real world testing in the US and Europe (though an unfavorable pattern worked against us in Europe) and has been through at least 10 firmware updates to keep improving its adaptability to new situations as they arise. The video above is from the 2nd firmware edition and it was already nailing lightning on the first stroke. Thats just incredible, and its only gotten better. I cannot recommend this piece of kit enough if you love lightning. Day or night. The competition flatout does not compare and I have tested just about all of it myself. If you want to scoop one for yourself theres a link on my page, and if you have any questions, ask away. Cant wait to use this thing more next season.

If current data holds, aurora will be visible for the majority of the United States at some point tonight. This impact is insanely strong.

2am on the Norwegian coast and you could walk around the black rock formations in the fjords without a flashlight. The moon on this night was so incredibly bright it made for some fascinating photos. And later on the aurora still managed to outshine the moon.
