Today I managed to catch the courting and mating process of the regal jumping spider (Phidippus regius). The male (black and white colored) can be seen waving his front legs to attract the females attention, which after a while works. She then lets him approach, and with his pedipalps deposits the s***m, you can even see the pumping action of the pedipalps.

The female had just been fed a small housefly, to lower the risk of her looking at him for her next meal. After the mating she dropped the fly, and I thought it best to separate them so the male survived to see another day.

Leopard snake (Zamenis situla)

These snakes must be one of Europe's most beautiful snakes in my opinion. They can be found in both striped and blotched variations in the wild, this is one of four juveniles we found two years ago in Parga, Greece.

Unique looking giant day gecko (Phelsuma grandis)
This juvenile gecko displays a brilliant blue color over its entire body, where it normally would have been bright green.

Fold-away photo studio

I’ve been quiet for a while, with moving across country taking up most of my time. The new house sports a reptile room three times the size of the last one, which means plenty of space for all the animals, as well as a small dream of mine. A semi-permanent photo setup for reptile photography! I made this flip-down frame above a small work-desk, with two cheap rolling window shades, one black and one white, hidden in a shelf above the frame. This makes the setup quick to deploy when inspiration strikes, and to stow away when it fades away.

Maternal care in scorpions

Scorpions does not lay eggs, but rather give birth to live young, which then climb onto the morthers back. They will stay on her back until they complete their first molt, and their new exo-skeleton hardens. During this time they are very vunerable, with a soft body, as well as non-functioning claws and stinger. The mother however will do her best to protect them, and can be seen as very aggressive. Once they leave her back, they are on their own to hunt and eat food.

This asian forest scorpion (Heterometrus sp.) gave birth about ten days ago, and it will not be long until they are ready to climb down.

Unintentional biodiversity hotspots

Powerlines are an eyesore in otherwise unbroken nature and forests, but they can also be seen as a positive to many animals. Studies in Norway have show that the about 11,000 km of powerlines in Norway can provide important habitat for otherwise declining populations of bees. As well as harboring higher biodiversity in general than the dense forest on either side.

Several of the dense populations of adders I know of in Norway are in the clearings under powerlines. The forest is cleared a couple of times in a decade, and only the larger trees are cleared, leaving plenty of low vegetation and shelter for both adders and prey. The clearing creates two adjacent edge habitats, which are also known for supporting large biodiversity, and edge habitats against forest is often where we find the best adder habitats.

Up close and personal

This beautiful female adder (Vipera berus) was cooperating so well I decided to bring out the wide macro lens to get this super close up shot of her. In this photo the front of my lens is no more than a couple of centimeters from her head, yet the wide angle of the lens lets me include a lot of the surrounding forest as well. I will leave a "behind the scenes" photo in the comments to show how close she is.

Blue or red?

On todays hike we found these two stunning color variants of the common adder (Vipera berus). The first a freshly shed male with a light blue color in contrast to the black zig-zag-stripe on his back. The second one is a young melanistic female, who will probably turn pure black in the next years, but for now she had a lot of red color on her belly and chin, while the rest was black.

Jungle carpet python (Morelia spilota cheynei)

While a more typical apperance for this species in the wild is dark brown and a dull yellow, there are exceptions with individuals showing brighter yellows and darker blacks. In captivity these colors and contrasts have been further enhanced through focused breeding, making these spectacular bright yellow and pitch black snakes!

Boa constrictor with a blood red tail

This line of boa constrictors originate from the south american country of Guyana, where the wild boas have a stunningly red tail, and nice clean contrasts on their pattern. Which makes for stunning photos.

Waiting for the adder season, which is right around the corner here in Norway, by looking through older photos. This is a beautiful male adder from two years ago. The hint of blue color in his scales looked great against the red tones in the heather in the background.

Madagascar giant day gecko (Phelsuma grandis)
.. or the green flash as this male gecko should be called. These geckos are fast, skittish, and fragile. Combined with feet that can stick to anything, means getting this guy to stay put for a photo was a real struggle. Walls and ceilings were traversed, but a photo finally happened.
