Gahana(गहना) Series – II

Featuring: Haari(हारी), Jhamke Fuli and Bulakhi

After interacting with Manmaya Thami for several hours, I decided to take a rest. As I was returning back to the Thami Homestay, I saw an elderly woman busy working on the millet farm. She caught my attention as she was wearing a piece of very unique and beautiful jewellery made up of coins around her neck. It was an extraordinary piece of jewellery and all of the coins were Indian. I was very amazed to see that and questioned her to understand the story of this beautiful culture.

Her name was "Pretimala Thami". She was looking radiant in these beautiful pieces of Jewelleries. She shared that the particular jewellery made up of coins was called - Haari(हारी). It was adapted from the Tamang and Sherpa culture in the early days. There was a tradition for male members in the family to work in India ( mostly Gangtok). While these men returned back home to Nepal mostly during the festivals, they brought money and even coins with them. The Thami women then crafted these jewellery using the coins brought home by the male members of the family. She expressed that the generation of Today neither follows nor is aware of these cultures.

Gahana(गहना) Series

Featuring: Jhamke Fuli and Bulakhi

A few months back, I traveled to a remote village of Dolakha district called “Babare/Kalinchowk. There, I had an opportunity to interact with people from "Thami(थामी)" community who had a rich culture, history and a different way of life. I was mostly taken aback by their love for unique jewellery. Such cultures of past are often forgotten by the new generation and have now become folklores. In this visit, I decided to capture their beautiful jewellery through photographs and showcase the faces of “Thami” community. I feel very lucky that I had my camera with me and can now share their stories through these photographs.

The woman in this photo is Man Maya Thami. This particular piece of jewellery which she is wearing in the photograph was gifted by her parents during her wedding ceremony. She says she loves it and has never taken it off. With a gentle shyness, she agreed and smiled for my camera.
