Orchids
ORCHID PROPAGATION USING SAWDUST
Introduction
Orchids are a prevalent group of flowering plants and are most fascinating among the different communities. They are spawning around all the continents except Antarctica. In Nepal, many species are reported among the upper Terai, Hilly, and lower Himalayan regions. Most orchids are Epiphytes.
Due to human activities like deforestation, illegal poaching, and forest fire different species of orchids are becoming rare and even red-listed.
Orchids have high medicinal value and bear attractive flowers.
Research Objective
To find out the growth behavior of orchid plants in sawdust.
Materials and Method
Materials
Plastic Pots, Saw Dust, Rope
Method
First, the different species of orchids were collected from the wild.
The roots were washed and planted on the plastic pots filled with sawdust.
Ropes were used to hang the orchid pots.
Water sprinkle was given from time to time to maintain the moist condition.
Observation
The growth of the plant was seen after the second week which shows the successful acclimatization of the plant from wild to domestic. Flowering can also be seen on the Aerides species of Orchid. This shows that the plant survives in the sawdust as a medium.
Result and Conclusion
The orchid plant can survive in the wild when planted on sawdust under moisture.
Orchid propagation can also be done by using sawdust as a medium.
Discussion
Orchids can survive in sawdust as fully functional media. Most of these orchids were spotted in Schima wallichi trees in the wild. The barks of these species of trees give easy association for orchid plants to spawn.
Here in our experiment, we have used sawdust as growing media for orchids. The furniture was found to be made using Schima wallichi trees from where the sawdust was collected.
So, there might be some essential and characteristic media components on those barks that can be confirmed.
Future Recommendation
The barks of Schima wallichi can be the research topic for the upcoming experiment,
We can commercially synthesize the media for orchids after the successful extraction of chemical components from those barks.
For easy acclimatization of orchids, you can use sawdust as the media.
