Lakhey dances are especially popular during festivals in Kathmandu Valley, including Indra Jatra and local jatras. These performances are not only entertainment but also help preserve Newar traditions, history, art, music, and religious beliefs.

Lakhey is more than just a scary mask or dance. Lakhey is a symbol of protection, tradition, identity, and the rich cultural heritage of the Newar community.

गथामुगः नेवार समुदायमा मनाइने एउटा महत्वपूर्ण सांस्कृतिक पर्व हो। यसलाई घण्टाकर्ण पनि भनिन्छ। यो पर्व विशेषगरी श्रावण कृष्ण चतुर्दशीका दिन मनाइन्छ।

कथाअनुसार, प्राचीन समयमा घण्टाकर्ण नाम गरेको एक राक्षस थियो। ऊ निकै शक्तिशाली र अत्याचारी थियो। उसले मानिसहरूलाई दुःख दिने र बाटोमा बसेर उनीहरूलाई सताउने गर्थ्यो। भगवान् शिव र विष्णुप्रति पनि उसको सम्मान थिएन।

उसको कानमा ठूला–ठूला घण्टी झुन्डिएका थिए। त्यसैले उसलाई घण्टाकर्ण भनिएको हो। मानिसहरूले उसको अत्याचारबाट मुक्ति पाउन देवताको पूजा गरे।

अन्ततः देवताको कृपाले घण्टाकर्णको अन्त्य भयो। त्यसको सम्झनामा मानिसहरूले गथामुगः पर्व मनाउन थाले। यस दिन घर–आँगन सफा गरिन्छ, चोकमा गथामुगःको प्रतीक बनाइन्छ र साँझपख त्यसलाई टोलबाहिर लगेर जलाउने वा विसर्जन गर्ने चलन छ।

गथामुगः पर्वले दुष्ट शक्तिमाथि सत्य र असल शक्तिको विजय भएको सन्देश दिन्छ। साथै, यस दिनदेखि नेवार समुदायमा विभिन्न चाडपर्वको सुरुवात हुने विश्वास पनि गरिन्छ।
