Portrait of a young girl in Mugu, the forgotten mountainous region of West-Nepal.
In Mugu, West-Nepal, approximately 55,000 people live in small communities that are scattered in a mountainous area. Despite recent progress in the construction of roads, most of these communities are still cut-off from modern civilization and can only be reached by tackling long strenuous mountain tracks. Families lack basic supplies, such as clothing, safe drinking water, and electricity. Many families struggle deeply and survive on a day-by-day basis, often with no hope for change. .
I took this shot in 2013 during a field visit as development program manager for the German NGO www.back-to-ife.org.
Back to Life e.V. improved and improves the lives of needy and most disadvantaged people in India from 1996-2017 and since 2009 in Nepal. Back to Life’s engagement in Nepal focusses on education, health, and income generation. Their projects include construction of schools and birth centres, trainings in agriculture, hygiene, health care, as well as informal saving and loan groups.
