Ruru (Moreporks) are one of three owls found in NZ, along with the introduced Little Owl and the Barn Owl who very recently colonised NZ from Australia. Previously NZ was also home to the endemic Laughing Owl (Whēkau), however they were declared extinct in 1940 likely due to predation by introduced mustelids

Weka are an iconic flightless bird endemic to NZ. Unfortunately like many of our other birds, they are threatened by introduced predators like ferrets and dogs. Since 1863, there have been about 100 attempts to establish new weka populations but only 14 of these were successful, mostly on small islands where predators are easier to eliminate 🐀
