My stacked photos of G3 ATLAS. Taken at Piha, Auckland New Zealand on 24 January 2025.

Camera: Sony a7IV
Lens: WO Redcat 51 f/4.9, 250mm
Mount: CEM26

First shot:
53, 20” shots ISO3200 (17m20s integration time)

Second shot:
23, 20” shots, ISO3200 (11m20s integration time)

I took this series of shots as G3 ATLAS was close to setting for the evening. The last 6 minutes or so, the comet went red due to the atmospheric haze. Initially I removed those shots and created the second image you see on the post. I really like the clean blue and white. It feels a bit more delicate and gossamer-like.

I then integrated that final 6 minutes. I decided to work out the white balance after stacking and as a result , I got an amazing show of colours. It feels wider, stronger and more robust, but also still see the individual streams of dust in its tail. The anti-tail looks amazing.

I can’t choose between the two my favourite so I won’t, but I’m very happy to have created something of this quality.

With cloudy and Stormy weather throughout the North Island New Zealand this week, I wanted to get a chance to photograph Comet G3 ATLAS. I went to the best forecasted area of the North Island for the evening of 18th - Taranaki.

So on Saturday I made my way down and set up near the Cape Egmont Lighthouse and photographed the comet. I had a fantastic time, albeit hectic.

I’m hoping to capture some clear skies over the next 10 Days. It’s going to be one of those “game time decisions” every day at 5pm.

Used two cameras: Sonya7c and Sony a7iv

Used two camera lenses - Sony 50mm G f2.5 and Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3

The big New Years Solar Storm happened while Auckland was shrouded in clouds, but I managed to get out the following evening and catch just a Quick Look at the last bit of the storm.

A great start to 2025!

Now to get ready for Atlas G3!

Such a special night. Pigs is one of my all-time favorite places to take Astro photos in the Auckland area. I wanted to get a shot of Lion Rock with the Aurora and was so happy have caught this moment.
