Karamatura

When we moved to Titirangi last year, this is exactly what drew me here. A short drive from home and we are in the lush ancient forests of the Waitakere ranges. I managed to grab this shot just downstream from Karamatura Falls. Climbing down the banking on slippery rocks, carefully balancing my tripod in the stream, and grasping onto the side of the stream with my arse cheek on a rock.
The other side of the lens wasn't very glamorous but I'm quite happy my efforts not to fall in were rewarded!

Bottlenose Dolphins in a playful mood in Doubtful Sound / Patea.

I can't decide which photo I like best, which do you like A or B?

'Silence'

๐Ÿ“Doubtful Sound / Patea

Doubtful Sound was named 'Doubtful Harbour' in 1770 by fellow Yorkshireman, Captain Cook, who did not enter the inlet as he was uncertain whether it was navigable under sail. "It is Doubtful we can harbour in there".
It was later renamed Doubtful Sound by whalers and sealers, although it is not technically a sound but a fiord.
Imagine sailing all this way from Whitby, Yorkshire, to not enter this most beautiful wonder of the world!
Poor judgement James!
You can almost imagine this .newzealand ship being Captain Cooks Endeavour in this photo.

The Maori name for Doubtful sound is 'Place of silence'. Beautiful

๐Ÿ” Mount Madeline range

Taken at Milford Sound, looking back up the valley towards Homer Tunnel.
The views down here were incredible everywhere you looked. I settled on this composition as my first of the day in Milford Sound as the snow-capped mountain range was really capturing the sun beautifully with a blue sky background. The misty clouds just add a layer of drama to the scene, which I loved. The forest looks as ancient as time but will be fairly 'new' in the glacially carved valley.

๐Ÿ” Mount Talbot, taken from Monkey Creek ๐Ÿ’

This photo was taken from the side of State Highway 94 on the way to Milford Sound. Just 2 days before this image we drove up the same valley but couldn't see any of this view due to heavy snowfall! So we returned (I begged my wife) on a 2 hour roadie to get the views!

Apparently this area got its name from William Henry Homerโ€™s dog, Monkey! Homer was a European settler who worked in the Fiordland area as a surveyor in the 1800s.
The tunnel linking Milford Sound via SH94 to Te Anau is named after Mr Homer! What a guy!
