Manja Wachsmuth Photography

Manja Wachsmuth Photography For the Love of Photography Manja comes right out of the Scandinavian photographic tradition. Manja says: “I’ll go all the way for the perfect result!

Her work is fresh and beautifully lit like the long summer nights and sharp winter days of her native Denmark. Manja has many years of experience from both the editorial and commercial market, shooting mostly natural light. Her clean and simple style has impressed in magazines, books and advertising in Denmark, Norway, Germany, UK, US, Australia and New Zealand. I’ll help my clients bring their fo

od or product in focus in authentic environments and make outstanding pictures for their use. My philosophy is to create remarkable visuals with few effects and never to forget that a picture always has a purpose to serve.”

To take her passion for food photography to a higher level, Manja left her home country 8 years ago to establish herself in New Zealand.
“My ambition is to always go further with my work and I believe that traveling and working in different countries will inspire and contribute to my work. Specialties: Food, Product, Stil-life, Architechture

The Restaurant Cronicles. Dinner catchups at . Two catchups mixed together into one, isn’t it the best when two groups of friends get along!
We had Jamón, some Potato appetiser(yum!), Crudo (even more yum!), Tomato Peach Salad with Basil and gorgeous dressing, Les’ famous French sausage (we ate it before I could get a good pic!), sourdough and broccolini. Served with (wankers) Pet Nat and chilled Red - I forgot the specifics, but Mo is your man when you go here, you can trust his advice!
Thanks .force , .hugues and for a good time! I’m full, but will be back for dessert very soon 👌🏻

A sneaky peak from my print folio, the core purpose of it is to lead the viewer through my skills in the studio photographing food & products, as well as lifestyle photography in the field. But foremost I aim to show my personality as a human, a foodie, an imperfect perfectionist and what it’s like to work with me as a photographer, a creative person and a collaborator.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s about finding beauty all around you and intimate connection through delicious moments.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you are someone who collaborates with photographers to create compelling images showcasing products, services and ideas, I’d love to shout you a wine or a coffee and show it to you, so you can spot the echoes while flicking through the textured cotton rag and enjoying the details upclose.

Would you like to know what my print folio looks like 👀?
In an increasingly digital world, constantly glued to our phones, I decided to create a new print folio. I believe in putting on a conscious effort to slow down and showcase my work in all the ways it can be shown and what better way than to do it in print?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So how do you string down 15 years of creative food shoots of all shapes and sizes into a book that flows? The common thread in mine is echoes. Can you spot them?

12/02/2025

The start of this year has been about leaning into what truly matters - deep connection and facing fear head-on. Connecting with myself, with nature, with family. For almost a year, we planned it: Summiting Mount Taranaki.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Dad, at 69, gave it a valiant effort. He’s fit, determined, but made the call to bow out just before the serious section of the scree. I had to keep going. The spirit of the mountain felt strong, the weather was perfect, and I was prepared: Gear, comms, food & water. I know you shouldn’t climb alone, but I wasn’t really alone. The mountain was alive with people, each on their own journey.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was brutal. A bit too much weight around my waist (food photography will do that to you). Self-doubt creeping in. But I’ve done tough hikes before, I owed it to myself to try. The scree was relentless, but encouragement from fellow hikers kept me going.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Then, the clouds rolled in. The boulders ahead disappeared into thick mist. Only two route stakes visible at a time, 25+ still to go. Time slipping away. My mind whispered the question: Is this brave, or just reckless?
Fear sank in, and I was close to panicking but a stranger’s kindness switched it off. A fellow climber, calm and unwavering, gave me a pep talk that shifted my mindset. One foot after the other, I climbed over the crater boulders. Standing on the ridge, the weather cleared and the world falling away beneath me, the view was beyond words. Surreal. A mix of terror, awe, and accomplishment. From here I climbed into the crater and touched Stake 1. I climbed Taranaki!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The descent was no easier, but I made it. 13.5 hours. 1,687 vertical metres. Half an hour after dark (with a torch in hand), I reached the car park. Dad was waiting.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This climb wasn’t just about the mountain, it was about limits, courage, and the people who show up for you when you need it most. Face your fears will be my mantra for the year.

Every now and again, the absolute perfect breif comes along, and this is it. This shoot for Manuka Health is at the very core of what I love to do and what I’m good at. Detail orientated studio arrangements of food. Attentative lighting that highlights the qualites of a product yet isn’t loud and attentionseeking on it’s own. Meticulously arranged product and produce alongside elements that hint to the story behind a product.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We were tasked with creating a series of stills and short motion spots, showcasing Manuka Health’s premium immune boosting honey in an elevated, arty way. Backgrounds were pained into the late hours of the night, which would form the base of fitting our story to an already exsisting image library of blue and ultra violet for this ambitious brand.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thanks to incredible art direction and collaboration with an absolute dream team, this series is like little pieces of art, that make my heart sing, and hopefully your mouth drool.

You won’t believe the story behind these vibrant summer cocktail shots! Insane weather and an unmovable deadline meant we had to get creative!
Despite rain, grey skies, and interchangeable weather we were able to pull off nothing less than sheer magic 🌟
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve been itching to share this series of summer photos we snapped for Fever Tree. A reputable brand whose authentic laid-back style I’ve admired for a while, naturally I was very excited and honoured to receive a cool brief for their summer campaigns and new product launches. I was able to combine my skills in product photography with an on-location lifestyle shoot, where we crafted a range of organic, summery images set in two perfect scenes: A chic rooftop bar and a cozy pub garden. The hidden gem of Galbraith’s garden in Auckland, complete with Fever Tree-branded umbrellas, became our unexpected hero, shielding us from the weather and adding the perfect touch to some of our scenes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Naturally, I had my dream team there, .hugues & .hugues helping with the styling, making the cocktails look crisp and delicious and .nz & .photo assisting with digi and lights - sunshine magic!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This shoot was a true testament to growth and learning. Facing unexpected challenges head-on made us all better, and the result? Authentic, adorable, and perfect summer cocktails made with Fever Tree’s delicious mixers, captured in the late afternoon sun. So kick back, relax, and cheers!

Wednesday morning last week I woke up to this incredible news: I've been announced as the regional NEW ZEALAND winner of THE PINK LADY® FOOD PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2023 in renowned global competition Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year Award.

I love the silent modesty of this image of Marcus, the chef in the restaurant kitchen; The simple light and the calm moment where he’s preparing food alongside his own thoughts. It's actually an “out-take”, originally part of a photoshoot for Cuisine Magazine last year at Farina Ponsonby, commisiined by Kelli Brett.

My Story

Manja Wachsmuth is an award winning, Danish photographer. Having spent the last 20 years in the professional photography industry, shooting advertising campaigns and editorial content for clients in Scandinavia, Germany, UK, US, Australia and running her own business in New Zealand, Manja confidently works across the sprectrum of photographic challenge.

Now living in Auckland with her Kiwi husband and their two boys, Manja has established herself as a sought-after food and lifestyle photographer, working with agencies, book publishers, magazines, lifestyle brands, top chefs & restaurants.

Her Scandinavian heritage is reflected in the clean and simple style of her photography, that is evocative and beautifully lit like the long summer nights and sharp winter days of her native Denmark.

Manja brings a direct approach, clear vision and strong sense of purpose to every shoot. Her goal is always to create authentic images that are beautiful in their detail, images that serve as pause from the chaos of everyday life, or “pockets of beauty and order”, as she describes them.
