There's a special kind of portrait I never tire of taking β a mother with her child.
The quiet intensity of it. The way her face shifts when she looks at them. The small adjustments β a wisp of hair being tucked away, a little wipe of chocolate pudding that appeared during the snack break. A glance β that say more than any pose ever could.
A few favourite images captured over many years. In every one of these images, there is a woman loving and being loved. And behind every one of them there is another woman β if not several, helping her in a myriad of ways.
The aunt who remembers every birthday, sending beautifully curated gifts - on time. The friend who arrives with dinner and stays for the dishes. The grandmother whose cookies never make it to the tin. The teacher, the godmother, the incredible nanny. Women who don't appear in the family portrait but show up everywhere else.
Today is for you, too. The mothers, and the women who help mothers. The ones who give us our families, and the ones who quietly help us hold them together.
Toni Morrison once asked, "When a child walks into the room, does your face light up?" That, more than anything, is what I look for through the lens. And it is everywhere β if you know where to look.
Happy Mother's Day β to all of the mothers, and those that support us along the way.
