Sometimes the biggest barrier to sustainability isn’t intention; it’s the system. I was at the Scandinavian Business Association AGM this week, hosted at IKEA, and came away with a completely new perspective. Hearing examples of where regulation made sustainable choices harder was eye-opening.

It made me think about my own work. In photography, sustainability isn’t just about materials. It’s about creating images with purpose that last, not waste. About reusing the same materials over and over again and still making it look different every time.

Too many businesses treat photography like styling, something that just fills space on a website.

But images do more than decorate.�They signal quality.�They signal positioning.�They signal trust.

A luxury brand needs different visuals than a startup.�A law firm needs different imagery than a fitness brand.

Photography should support strategy, not sit on top of it.
If your images don’t reinforce your message, they weaken it.

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to attend a talk by Novo Nordisk through NZSBA.

I went in expecting to learn about a successful pharmaceutical company. I left inspired by something much bigger.

What fascinated me most wasn’t a product or a business strategy—it was their long-term way of thinking.

Learning how the Novo Nordisk Foundation still retains controlling voting rights in the company was a refreshing reminder that not every business is built around the next quarterly result. Their model allows them to think decades ahead, investing in research, innovation and improving health.

Whether you agree with every decision a company makes or not, I have a huge amount of respect for organisations that have the courage to build for the long term.

It was a powerful reminder that purpose and commercial success don’t have to compete—they can strengthen each other.

Thank you to NZSBA for another thought-provoking event.
