I spent a lot of years trying to outrun or outsmart vulnerability by making things certain and definite, black and white, good and bad. My inability to lean into the discomfort of vulnerability limited the fullness of those important experiences that are wrought with uncertainty: Love, belonging, trust, joy, and creativity to name a few. - Brene Brown

Cornwallis Wharf.

Earl's favourite wharf. Cornwallis is such a popular wharf for fishing it is difficult to find it empty. I waited until just after sunset and generally made a nuisance of myself. Small figures in my images is often a feature of my work and so I was quite pleased that one lone fisher remained.

I am yet to capture the image I want of these cliffs at Karekare. There is a time before sunset when the light hits them in the most fantastic way. The great thing about photography is there is always a next time.

Family quarrels have a total bitterness unmatched by others. Yet it sometimes happens that they also have a kind of tang, a pleasantness beneath the unpleasantness, based on the tacit understanding that this is not for keeps; that any limb you climb out on will still be there later for you to climb back. It has been quite a while since I posted an image. This is somewhat due to a to being a little more focused on studio work but also I have questioned the position of social media in my photography. From my own experience and observing more generally some of my favourite photography pages, I wonder what is the motivation to capture and share images. In this day and age do we create images to satisfy ourselves or our audience? If the answer is that we create for both does one take precedence/should one take precedence? If we create for our audience is that done at the cost of the imagery we really want to create? The last few landscape images I have shot I have not shared. Sometimes I haven't even processed the images instead being satisfied by the experience of capturing. When I started my career in photography our sharing extended to our closest circle, our mentors and students, perhaps an exhibition or a competition. I believe we primarily created for ourselves. Today I wonder whether we are compelled to create primarily for others. That we do it for the likes. I'm not sure if one motivation is more right than the other or whether it is simply different. Here is an image I created for myself.

A couple of hours before sunrise and the sky begins to lighten even in the western sky. With this image I waited a while and reshot the scene at twilight and blended the foreground in for some more detail. The moisture in the atmosphere makes the stars appear larger than normal

While over in Sydney last weekend I spent a bit of time at Galston Gorge which is stage 4 of the Great North Walk. I met a couple of interesting characters in there. A Turkish gentleman with some interesting insights into Peter Costello and a couple who had just released a red bellied black snake after removing it from someones back yard.

This image was shot about half an hour after the other image I posted the other day. It is interesting to see the difference the moon makes in astrophotography. In this image the moon is at 12º elevation and in the previous image it is at 4º elevation. The take home message here is that the use of apps are invaluable to understand, plan and execute this type of imagery.

I don't usually post exif but this one is f3.5, 20sec, iso2000 @ 24mm and for those still reading the other one was the same except iso6400

This is my secret spot..I kid, it's Lake Tomarata.

It has been quite a while since I've had an opportunity to shoot anything other than in the studio but finding a bit of time last weekend I headed up to Te Arai. Recent news that developers are in early stages of planning housing, a golf course and a reserve at Parkiri Beach makes me anxious for what planned for this area. In the mean time Aucklanders should take every opportunity they can to enjoy this part of the world.

In this image what appears to look like the sun is in fact a 24% waning crescent moon. It was awesome to watch rise.
