“I think individuality is incredibly important. It’s what makes each person unique, and ultimately, it’s what stays with you your experiences, your choices, and the way you choose to express yourself. While I understand that people can feel pressure to conform, I really value the idea of standing proud in who you are and what makes you different. To me, individuality is about being true to yourself and making choices that reflect what genuinely makes you happy, rather than trying to fit into expectations.

“Pesronally I see Tattoos as a way of carrying art on your body. When they’re done thoughtfully and with intention, they can really complement and elevate someone’s appearance. It’s not only a form of self-expression, but also a kind of visual identity almost like fashion, but more permanent and meaningful. That’s what makes it so powerful to me.”

“Tattoos are certainly a powerful form of self-expression and individuality, and I think that’s something that’s become much more widely understood over time. The idea of tattoos being judged negatively feels quite outdated to me while I understand people come from different perspectives, at the end of the day, tattooing is an art form.”

I got my back piece not long after having my son. When I was younger, I always dreamed of one day covering my entire back there’s something so striking about a well-executed back tattoo. It carries both beauty and strength, and as such a feminine part of the body, a thoughtfully designed piece that complements the natural form feels incredibly empowering.

I trusted Ebony with creative freedom, sharing only a brief vision and allowing her to interpret it in her own way. She brought it to life perfectly it was exactly what I had imagined.

To this day, it remains my favourite tattoo. It feels like a reflection of who I once was, while also symbolising the beginning of my journey into motherhood. When I look at it, I see both the younger version of myself and the woman I’ve grown into. I’ve always resonated with the saying “time is an illusion” and that’s the first thought that comes to mind each time I see my back piece.

I got my first tattoo when I was 18, and now at 26 I can look at each one and remember exactly where I was in life at the time. They’ve almost become a timeline of different versions of myself.

I have this strong belief that we go through multiple versions of ourselves within one lifetime, and I think tattoos reflect that they capture moments, phases, and growth. That’s what makes them so special to me.

None of my tattoos have deep meanings behind them, but they’re still important because they represent my love for art and creativity. I’m drawn to things that are expressive and a bit different the crazier, the better. For me, choosing tattoos has always been more about the creativity and the beauty of the art itself, and that’s what I love most about my tattoos.

IMOGEN

Can you tell us about your journey into tattooing — what first drew you to this craft?

When I was younger, art was always my escape it’s where I felt the happiest and most myself. I’ve always loved being in that creative process. Growing up around my stepdad, who’s covered in tattoos, I became really drawn to body art and how expressive it is. I think tattoos say so much about a person, and being able to create something that meaningful and permanent for someone is what I love most about tattooing. There’s so much spirituality behind tattooing, it’s a really beautiful thing.

I am Imogen , a tattooist based in Christchurch New Zealand, at Otautahi Tattoo. I specialise in anything and everything fineline, black and grey. I really enjoy the balance between creativity and craftsmanship. I get to take an idea, make it unique to the person, and execute it with precision. That process designing, refining, and then bringing it to life on skin is what I find the most rewarding. I particularly enjoy the challenge of creating something original, but also the discipline it takes to execute it properly.

Being Fijian Indian, to me, means carrying a mix of cultures that feels warm, familiar, and grounding. It’s the food, the family energy, the humour, the values, and the way we show up for each other. It’s knowing where I come from, knowing the history behind it, and feeling proud of the strength and softness our community holds. It’s a big part of who I am, the way I love, the way I connect, and the way I move through the world.
